Bizarre Concepts in Fiction

I remember playing Dragon Quest 11 and fish are cognitive like humans. That's not the weird part, the weird part is that instead of Mermaids and Mermen being vegetarians, they have to ask the FISH for permission to eat them. The cute part is that it's really common for the fish to say "yes". Not because they're depressed, but because they understand that they live in a food chain.... and the person is hungry so... yeah why not?

They aren't second class citizens either, the entire Mermaid community takes it very seriously when you bite a fish without its permission. There's a side mission where a merman is put on trial for nibbling a fish without its permission and he's treated as a pariah for doing so. If I remember correctly, you have to find the fish to show that yeah... he DID ask for permission.

A bizarre concept that I think is worth mentioning is when fictional characters becomes self aware even if it's only for a brief moment for a comedic joke. I know people talk about how it's just cliche nowadays but I still think the unusual part of it is, in my opinion, a good way to show how a part of the human psychology works. I'm not a psychologist but I think it's a cool concept if done correctly.

Also, I wrote other paragraphs here but deleted it cause I wasn't sure if it was necessary. Maybe it was? I don't know. xD

Well, I hate to bring this up but Doki Doki Literature Club made me realized you can always make a cliche moment and make it really unique. Without spoiling it, there is a movie, I forgot what it's called, in the movie the main character is really self-aware and would look at the camera every time she was going to deliver a line, like she knows you're watching. It's almost spooky at the same time.

Maybe I just look into this concept a little too much. xD

Because one is uncomfortable watching someone, does it entertain another person? It makes you wonder how each person might react differently to the same thing.

And I think it is why horror movies are so scary sometimes, especially in moments when the character is staring into the camera before something bad happens. Or when the ghost/killer also looks into the camera, you think they're aware of you and will come to get you. It adds to the suspense.

I think this is one of the reason why influencers are so big nowadays even though you only get to see this person through a screen you never feel like they're a stranger. The idea that influencers uses the method of knowing you're there is what keeps people coming.

Stuart Little is always one I just can't get over.

In the original book, the mom gives birth to the mouse child. Like what the hell?! I guess the book implies that he was a human, he was just very small and looked like a mouse.

In the movie they changed it to him being adopted. So instead of adopting a human child, they decide to adopt a mouse and treat him like a human. I guess he talks but it's so bizarre, why not adopt a human child and the mouse? Plus they own a cat, like did they not think that would be a problem. Also the story shames the human boy for not seeing the mouse as his brother, even tho he is right. The parents are weirdos and they are trying to drag their son into it.

I guess it is that type of thing where you shouldn't think too hard about it because you will give yourself a headache.

That actually reminds me of Mr. Peabody and Sherman. It's a dog that adopts a human child. It's not weird in the context of the story but the concept is bizarre.

The only thing I remember from this show is their creator (although I think I can be remembering that wrong). Like it was some old guy who had a dog and a cat.

I don't remember that ever being mentioned. I read the book many years ago and the only part I remembered was that the mom gave birth to a mouse. Looking up more info, yes he is a human but he looks like a mouse. There is also a tiny woman in the book who randomly shows up but disappears. I guess the writer was a bit of a strange man. He never finished the book yet he published it. The bird from the sequel film appears in the book, Stuart is looking for her but he never finds her, there is no conclusion, the book just ends.

A lot of people on Goodreads were really disturbed by the woman giving birth to a mouse.

That actually vaguely reminds me of Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy where dolphins turn out to be the most intelligent species on earth. They just stick around because humans give them fish and they leave earth before the planet is destroyed. That series has so many fascinating concepts though, it's worth a read.

This reminds me of a comic that I made a long time ago where the villain's motivation for becoming evil was him becoming aware of the fact that he lived inside a comic, and if there was no conflict then the story, and by extension the world that he lived in would end.

That sounds like the kind of story that would make me go into depression after reading it. You can DM me the story, I'd like to read it but if you're not comfortable sharing it then that's okay too. xD

This was something that I made in highschool in like 2012, and it has not aged gracefully.

It started as a way to make edgy jokes to make my friends laugh, and by the time an actual story started to come together I got too busy with school work and an after school job to really work on it.

The reveal of the villain and his motivation was one of the last things that I made for it. While I don't like 90% of the comic anymore I do think that the villain, and the planned ending were great Ideas.

Basically the way it was going to end was with the heroes writing off the villains talk about being in a comic as the ramblings of a madman, then they fight and defeat him.
The last scene would be the heroes talking about how the world would be a better place now that the villain is gone, and the scene would hold on a group shot of them watching the sunrise. The shot would linger for several pages, the art getting more and more faded until the last few pages were just blank.
