if you are a group of villains ,and you desire to ruin someone's life think of one reason you might be justifying your actions.

The vilains might think that, from their point of view, the hero has gained his great life through bad actions or the result of bad actions. These actions could benefit one group and be bad for a marginal group.
"You might have saved planet X, but by doing so, destroyed ours."

The other person is the real villain, it's all about perspective.

• they are a terrible person who hurts others, and hurting them is justified
• they hurt me or someone I love in some way, and now I'm owed vengeance. Eye for an eye.
• they have undeserved success and shouldn't have it
• they have undeserved happiness and shouldn't have it
• of course it isn't personal, but everyone will be better off and the lives of many will improve in some major way if this one life is ruined.
• it benefits me in some way to ruin them, and that's life, buddy -- I'm no worse than anyone else. The strong survive, that's just how you have to be to make it.

1) This person stands in the villains way of accomplishing what they want to do- i.e., world domination, power, conquest.

2) The person whom the villains want to destroy may have caused them each stress/strife at one time or another in their criminal lives- sharing a common enemy.

1) They hurt me, either personally or through family, so I hurt them back.
2) All because of money, man - I have nothing against you, but the person paying me does, and its too much for me to turn down.
3) I was powerless, but with this power, I can make sure that nobody opposes or hurts me ever again, the way they did when I had no power. I'll make sure that nobody will ever hurt me again.
4) Perspective - I could be a villain who believes that the actions I take will lead to a better, brighter path for all mankind; If this involves world domination so be it.
5) Blackmail - Look, someone I love is being held hostage so I gotta fight you even if I don't like it. Sorry mate. Taking over the world is only because I can use those resources to find the damn blackmailer.
6) searching for something, and being willing to do whatever it takes to find it - even if it means taking over the world.
7) Deathseeker - I have done something unforgivable, lost everyone I love, and I deserve death, but I am too afraid to take my own life without meaning/ must accomplish final task. What better way to do that and die than at the heroes hands, serving as an adversary that causes Good to rise?
8) Everyone I know has died, and angry at the world, I strike back. The world took everything away from me, and so I will take everything away from it.

• they have too much power and theyre fucking people over and/or making our lives difficult with that power
• we're all bitter shits n they was more popular in highschool
• if we bring the hero to the brink of despair and take everything away from them, we can swoop in as the hero and/or blackmail them so theyre in our pocket
• it was an elaborate youtube prank
• the hero made a dire mistake / did something that hurt us / our interests and we want revenge
• they have dirt on us so we have to ruin their reputation, and might as well go whole hog and ruin everything while were at it
• we're assholes

The world has rotten into a corrupt, self indulged society in which the unjust justifies their actions because they say so, and no one cares to take action. A world in which no one cares for the well being on others and lives under the mentality of 'us versus them!' Governments will say anything to the masses while doing the opposite the next. The world waste its resources and potential on trivial task, idolizing idiots, and fail to evolve further in life. A world of hermits is what the hero unwittingly protect...and it's up to my group to break it...

Armageddon will be unleashed on the world, as precious resources, key cities and dense populated areas are purged from existence.
The hero tries to stop us...which is good...for it is the step we desire most out of the world. For at the time, the world would be at each others throats, bickering and arguing over the smallest of ideas, ready to send thousands to their doom for such an idea....

The fact that a hero was sent to stop us, even after we crushed all major governments, it shows a glimpse of hope...hope that cooperation with one another was made. Hope that unifies nations under one common enemy can help build the foundation to something stranger! Hope...that shows the world that one cannot live without the other...that they need each other in times of need.

The world needs monsters like us...for if we aren't the obvious threat, to push the world further, to break barriers and think pass bitter rivalries. If not for us...then what will stop you from seeing your next door neighbor as one?

Revenge, the villain was wronged by something the hero did or something the hero's family, race, country, city, etc. did.

Prejudice, the villain sees the hero as bad or inferior.

Depression, the villain is just unhappy and they want to take it out on people

Greed, the villain wants something and will kick who ever they want down to get it

A group of villains could be a society that lives by strict laws and culture and alienates and scapegoats someone who is different from them.

I think the reason has more to do with the general theme. Try looking at it the other way. A villain is only a hero who no one agrees with. It's the hero paradox. So, in the world you created, what would be the impetus for an action that is so heinous that it requires a hero, but from one perspective is essentially heroic?

If I were writing a group of villains, I would probably make them wealthy, industrious, self-indulgent, and ruthless. Angry that their wealth was being threatened by the hero, they would fight back brutally. Their brutality would define them as villains. Their self-indulgence would justify the hero's initial assertion of moral superiority. In the end, both the hero(es) and the villains would be shells of themselves, taken too far into the abyss in their battle with one another to see themselves as remotely human or deserving of polite society. It doesn't matter if it was a Sophie's choice for the hero(es) or the villains as it was their own agency that made them, and the villains what they are. You know, like real life.

But that's just me.

My favourite reason is pride - the person harmed their pride and they are vengeful towards them.

I do like the idea of the hero gaining recognition through evil deeds, while the character that's view as the villain had been trying to protect the innocent people from the "hero".
