Normally, I get pretty crazy with worldbuilding, but since I am compelled to write a lot more swiftly here, background details are more basic. Sanguine and The Red Plague (both novels) are set...somewhere in Western Europe
. The year is undetermined. Readers are largely led to assume that it is Victorian-era; most clothing consists of elaborate gowns and long cloaks, and there is much description of sprawling manors and cobblestone streets.
...Buuut in a private moment, one of the main characters is caught wearing jeans and a tank-top, and The Red Plague introduces a couple scantily-clad in leather and chains
.
The real truth is that everyone's just playing dress-up. The vast majority of the characters are immortal, nigh-invulnerable shapeshifters with magical powers, so what else to do but to have fun with it? Supposed anachronisms will thus creep in as certain characters choose more modern aesthetics for themselves (or just drop their "masks" in private), but as it stands, the mainstream practice is a celebration and fetishization of past cultures that we sometimes see in our own world.
I have planned more about the history of the world and what things are like on other continents, but I don't plan for much of that to come into play until the third entry.
