I have read Ultimo and Maximum Ride (OEL manga adaptation of the novel) and I like them both. I sorta caught up with Maximum Ride, but only read one volume of Ultimo in high school since they only had one volume; that is was interesting since Stan Lee helped make it and of course had a cameo in it.

So I recommend them both.

Okay, it's been awhile.

Ultimo is about a junior/senior high schooler accidently activating and acquiring a life-sized, albeit short, supernatural, sentient doll that is the epitome of Good.; the kicker is that the doll recognizes him. So together, they have to deal with the doll that is the epitome of Evil and acquire more dolls as to prepare for the ultimate Good vs. Evil.

The manga adaptation Maximum Ride is about four kids and their dog who are escaping an organization that turned them all into half avian mutants in one of their off-base labs. They also try to blend in to have a "normal" life; but events happen where they join a group to take down organization since they were not the first victims.

I remember reading Maximum Ride the novel a while ago and really enjoyed it. I haven't read the manga adaptation yet, but I've been meaning to.

Saga. Saga. Saga. I think this comic has been at the top of my list since it came out, and is still there. Brian K. Vaughan is a fantastic writer and Fiona Staples tells the story perfectly with her art. It's a grown-up (read: not ashamed of sex and genitals) comic about two fugitives from a galactic war (in which one side uses magic, btw), who started as soldiers on opposite sides and fell in love. I have never had so many feelings for a man with a TV for a head.

Lesser-known is 5Worlds, an all-ages Graphic Novel about a girl who practices the ancient magic called "Sand Dancing" and ends up tasked with restoring the five planets (hence, 5Worlds) that make up their solar system. It's quite phenomenal and anyone, like, ages 11 and up would find it really enjoyable.

I read a couple of other J Graphics (i.e. stuff meant for kids but that can be enjoyed by all) that I liked - The Deep & Dark Blue (fantasy world where two boys hide away in a magical monastery for girls, who weave the future), The Okay Witch (about a modern girl who finds out her mother is a 300-year-old witch), The Witch Boy (About a boy who wants to learn magic, when in his world only girls can learn magic, while boys learn shape-shifting). I started Black Bull of Norroway and really enjoyed it but I only read the first book.

One of my favorite manga series that I recommend a lot is Yotsuba because it always cheers me up. It's about a 5 year-old girl and her dad and their everyday adventures, like going to to the grocery store, learning how to ride a bike, or going to a festival. It's very cute and sweet.

But my favorite manga series of all time is FullMetal Alchemist. Everything about it is strong-- its characters, world-building, themes, and plot.. and it has the perfect blend of seriousness/sadness and humor.

This year, I also read a great comic book adaptation of Little Women called Meg, Jo, Beth & Amy.

I've definitely heard of Full Metal Alchemist. Not sure if I'll read the manga. I may watch the anime. I'll see if I can look into those other books you mentioned.
