Definitely agree that it should be used sparingly. Sorry if I sounded harsh. It is just one of those things that is easy to overuse, but very effective when used well. Kind of like salt.

I was inspired to reply to this question by a non-fiction book I was gifted, in which the author seemed incapable of writing three sentences without alliterating at least one of them (and it wasn't a comedy/poetry book). It really didn't help that he adopting a patronizing tone, and the alliteration just struck me as ridiculous. It was almost as if he thought that his ability to alliterate sentences would somehow convince the reader that he was smart and worth listening to. In the end it convinced me to stop reading.
