Definitely agree that it should be used sparingly. Sorry if I sounded harsh. It is just one of those things that is easy to overuse, but very effective when used well. Kind of like salt.
That's a pretty... interesting example haha
I was inspired to reply to this question by a non-fiction book I…
Not necessarily a pet peeve phrase, but I get rather riled up about alliteration...
Seriously though, alliteration is overrated. It's nice for adding emphasis to a line, but overuse in prose makes me want to vomit.
The ax blade languished in the dark liquid, and the headsman smiled at the beautiful blemish.
@NiharikaSarma already covered some of the best books about writing. I enthusiastically second Elements of Style for practical grammar and good style guidelines to follow. Another good one is Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. The best way to improve is to write a lot and read a lot. There's not really …
Here is my dark fantasy novel. Every century beasts converge on the realm from the Black, and a group with a special connection to the Black are the only ones who can deal with them. It follows a young street urchin training to become a member of the group, as well as the daughter of a noble lord wh…

Hi friends! I am 25, and I majored in Chinese and Literature but so far have only been able to find jobs in customer service and human services. I'm hoping build a portfolio so I can make a career as an author, but still working to pay the bills. I've been publishing chapters of my fantasy novel…
My dark fantasy novel is complete and edited on my hard drive at about 78,000 words. I've been releasing chapters weekly.
Subbed!
Character driven Dark fantasy with magic inspired by theoretical physics and Lovecraftian horror. Also set on a planet that sees the sun once a year, forcing the inhabitants to mark 24 hour periods with the moon.
This is a great idea! The moon hung high in the sky, bathing the dusty streets with its silver light. Dawn was yet far off. The boy watched the bread. He knew that his chance would be soon, but he would have to wait for it. The shopkeeper was careful, but not careful enough. Without fail, when…
Here's my novel! A character driven fantasy set on a planet that only rotates once per year. The 'magic' is inspired by theoretical physics and Lovecraftian horror. Episodes published every Friday. Thanks for reading!
