It's translated from French, so if you're going for literal it doesn't make much sense. I don't know enough French to give you a breakdown of why it is that way. but in this isn't "have" doesn't mean owning. it's like they're saying "have some cake." A term that is often used as an offer to eat it.

An alternate way to translate it, once you eat it you don't have it anymore. it's a really old idiom that really doesn't take into account nuances like saving half.

Either way, no matter your personal nuance, it just means "you can't have it both ways"

I add more because I recently heard it

Do not talk about the deceased or Do not talk ill about the deceased
So what, someone suddenly becomes a good and sacred holy relic because they are dead? I really don't get this. I know it's might be for protecting the loved ones' feeling and mourning stuff, but what about people who are legit wronged by the deceased (like abused children or spouse) who finally can speak up?
If the person is a scumbag asshole I'll keep talking shit about them and that's their legacy for being one, your actions can follow beyond death. Also isn't gossiping and talking shit about the dead is the point of history?

Also I hate it in discussion when people says "(Fill in blank) like you won't understand"
To add more context, example is in religious discussion about God they will say "Atheist like you won't understand".
Won't understand what? Please elaborate your point? Why being something or someone have to do with comprehensive thinking?
The sentence is like a sophisticated form of "Nah, I think you're stupid because the (insert something here) I believe is superior." Or they are too lazy and dumb to give a proper comeback.

That one used to bother me, too, until my husband explained this to me: in order to prevent wildfires, controlled burns are often used to burn away the stuff that allows the wildfires to rage on. It's all dry, dead, and doesn't help. It is controlled through different means. Anyway, from those controlled burns, the trees that are hydrated and healthy only get superficial burns, their seeds open and drop away, which allows new growth to develop into hydrated healthy trees.

So, literally fighting fire with fire works, but I personally think the saying is overused as a justification to do terrible things, but that's just me.

I've seen some references to gay people walking faster than average. But I've never seen this specific phrase. And I have no idea where the idea comes from (and I am one of those gay people).

Maybe it's a fujoshi thing? Kinda like the ones I was complaining about earlier.

On that note, regarding very specific sayings said in groups of people. This is one I ran into a few times when I was drawing a comic with anthro characters.

"That's speciesist" followed by a lecture on 'racism and representation' when furries are mad that you didn't draw what animal they associate with in your comic. I'm to busy dealing with racism and lack of representation in real life, I don't have fuking time to play fake racism with you guys.

I've only heard that term used sardonically... I cannot believe people are actually using it legitimately (although, I've heard some bizarre shit, so I wouldn't be completely surprised tbh).
