I need help with a list of common themes in Manga. Now, this doesn't mean the type of characters. As I don't read Manga I haven't got an idea apart from odd things here and there. All I have is Pokemon TV series (yes, that's anime, I know), Studio Ghibli films and Metal Gear Solid. I get a sense of perversion, lots of fighting, complex explanations, weird villains and that close-up gasp thing that they do. Please, educate me, people.

*Its common to see the main character (a guy) be weak and stupid, when in a pinch becomes somekind of invencible hero, surrounded by somewhat stupid girls with huge boobs. Theme: you are considered useless but in the inside you're strong.

*In shojo most romance occours in the school, usually between a girl that is bland, sensible and mentally slow with a pupular guy that is rude or shy but very kind when nobody is looking.

*Your life is somewhat miserable, and it gets worse, is a recurrent theme on mangas for adult people.

*That unsocial guy who is choosen by some mystic power to fight the evil and then changes from unsocial to anyones best friend and hero of the day.

I stopped reading manga and watching anime in general because most of them can be resumed in 4 simple statements, I don't mind seeng the same theme if its told with a different aproach, but most fail to do so... I feel I'm watching/reading the same thing with a different title and different characters, and also because a good story gets filled with tons and tons and tons of fanservice, making me forget why the hell I was watching/reading that on the first palce.

Ehhh....I mean, you may as well ask "what are some common themes in books/movies/tv shows/video games". It's a HUGE medium with wildly varying themes and concepts. "Sense of perversion" is definitely....like...ugh. I see where you're coming from with that notion, but it's actually a little offensive to the medium. It's like saying tropes in soap operas are defining traits of all TV shows.

I'll throw in some themes from series I'm a fan of:

Attack on Titan - humanity's struggle against impossible odds
Gurren Lagann - MANLY SPIRIT, coming of age, overcoming loss
Death Note - Justice vs morality, playing god
D.Gray-Man - loss, perseverance, love for one's enemies, trusting authority (or not)
Eureka Seven - coming of age, transition from boy to man
Fullmetal Alchemist - where do I even begin. Let's go with...uh...lemme get back to you on this.
Psycho Pass (not sure if there's a manga for this?) - Morality when a person's proclivity for crime can be quantified
Silver Spoon - Formation of goals, country life

These are just the ones I read and of course I'm going to stick to reading things with themes I like, so there are many more not listed.

You wanna know more about common tropes in Manga? Allow me to show you a door. -> http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Manga211

I will warn you, it's a rabbi hole, but you'll definitely come out the otherside knowing more and with the tools to know what you want to use and what to avoid. My last bit of advice? This rabbit hole is an adventure my dear, and adventure takes time. Best make some. wink

Well manga is not really a genre as it is a form of media with different genres, just like books/television/movies.

Different genres have their own tropes and themes depending on the genre. So the best thing you can do is just go read some.

I think you may be trying boil down too broad a category of media. Trying to make a list of common themes that run through all of manga is akin to making a list of themes that apply to every single live-action tv shows in the United States. You would probably be able to find some, but they would be pretty generalized. Manga is a gigantic industry that caters to all age groups. To encompass all of manga you would have to include everything from children's comics, to hard core porn, to action, to romance, to slice of life, to high concept artsy stuff, to the super low brow.
If you want to concentrate just on manga in the U.S. or in the West generally, that might narrow things down slightly. I can't really speak to the Western hemisphere at large, but most of the manga that gets licensed in the U.S. and Canada is either porn or is targeted toward younger audiences (children and teenagers). Popular shonen series in particular get brought over a lot because their content overlaps well with western superhero comics. Smaller series and series that western executives don't think will appeal to western comic audiences tend not to get translated into English.
This was probably super not helpful, but I'm honestly struggling to give you one generalization about manga that I wouldn't have to add about 30 caveats to. Sorry, I guess all I can tell you is just be prepared to do a lot of research.

I'm thinking of tropes mostly. Lots of fanservice, pointless filler, plot written by someone with the maturity of a 10 year old, lots of blood... literally gallons of blood that would never come out of a normal person, everyone is female and colorful haired except the main who is bland, stupid and brown haired, characters act like they took too much ecstasy e.i hyper, sex crazed, emotional, talk too fast. Girls are so bland they could be replaced with a cardboard cut out, no one would notice.

Mostly what I gathered from reading and watching anime/manga.

ok, for starters, it all depends on the genre.
if it's any sort of romance, expect dere archetypes
these are the 5 most common ones that have the simplest descriptions i could give you
Yandere: jealous psychopath
Tsundere: abusive sarcasm
Himedere: spoiled princess/ rich promiscuous snob
Kuudere: hidden emotions
Dandere: shy cute and kinky
As for action and darker stories with or without a ton of gore, expect a lot of boobs, a crap load of weapons, and a whole lot of badassery
just about any manga has fanservice of some sort, so if u want to avoid that.... u basically cant
As for adventure or mystery genres.. i cant say whats really common since i dont really read any manga or watch any anime of that kind.. at least not yet
so.. my info probably isnt much but i hope it helped u somehow.. :/

If it takes place in a school, your main character should always have his/her desk closest to the window. He/she should always be lost in thought until another character starts talking to him/her.

Manga has a very very large variety of genres, just like most comics.

However, when it comes to mainstream manga, they tend to be targeted at teenagers. The two major genres are shonen and shojo.

Shonen manga tend to have a teenage male protagonist who tries to be the very best at something. Best at sports, best at fighting, best at card playing, best at being a ninja, etc.
There are also ones about a teenager interacting with a ghost or demon, that is very common.

Shojo manga tend to have a teenage female protagonist and tend to focus more on romance. They usually take place in school and the main lead tends to be awkward and clumsy.

Another type of manga you might come across are Moe mangas. They tend to take place in high school and have multiple female leads and sometime little to no male characters. The characters tend to be "super cute" and have huge eyes.

Pokemon falls into kid manga, which tend to be about friendship and collecting things and competing in tournaments. But there are also kid manga about kids just doing kid stuff and they might have a robot or animal sidekick.

Thanks for all this information, each pot was helpful. I realise now that I was asking for answers in a massively broad spectrum. Despite that, thanks for the replies.
