Comparing art styles?

I think it's pretty natural to be compared to other artists, and most of the times those kinds of comments are made as a compliment! Art styles are evolved and inspired from each other, even if some people might think they are totally unique. For the artists who don't want to be compared, take those comments as feedback and keep changing your style ^^

I don't mind. I get that people usually make those kinds of comments as compliments, though the comparisons I have gotten have just been confusing to me. Everyone who's compared my art so far has compared it to the same comic, but can't put a finger on what makes them similar. Different story, different art style, but somehow they have the same "vibe."

Tbh I dont really mind if people compare my art styles (characters would probably differ and there's a difference in reaction when someone says "it looks like x" than "That's X!" which I get the latter often when i was young lmao).

I get comments saying my art reminds them of this and that manga which also made me check them out to see for myself. Tbh I'm not annoyed, to be compared to such artists makes me I'm not worthy. There were some that made a connection on how i shade reminding them of HnK which surprised me because I might subconsciously picked it up from there.

My art was recently compared to Stan Sakai, creator of Usagi Yojimbo. I don't mind being compared to professional comickers and artists at all. That's a huge honor.
I'm glad that it was mentioned, because that means I can go and dissect their work, and see how I can learn from them, to see how I can use my similarities to an advantage.

I usually get compared to other western creators or series with manga-influenced styles. Usually stuff like WITCH, Ben 10, Totally Spies etc. They're not my main influences, but you know, I see it since those people probably also were influenced by a mix of 90s-00s manga and anime mixed with American and European comics art, so their work has a similar look.

I find that sometimes people will compare people's ocs to established characters in big media as a type of compliment. I understand that it can be infuriating but I don't think those comments come from a place of negativity. I personally love when people can pick out Jack Kirby and Itaru Hinoue as my main influences! It's pretty evident haha. Yet on the other hand, I had an awkward situation when I was on Twitter where someone told someone else "wow, this reminds me so much of MeltingCORE's style and art" and even tagged me in the post. I felt really bad for the artist because I obviously don't own the color red or the concept of demon/monster girls... The artist seemed pretty nervous... I think they thought I was going to "call them out"? (Yes, people really do this garbage on Twitter and attack random artists for "copying" their "faves". This is far different than the ones called out for literally stealing lol.) I told them that the work was awesome instead and asked the follower to not do that again. Having people compare your art to your peers can be detrimental to both involved because it comes across like "oh THIS person copied you". It's like a fight is trying to be started. A big no from me!

People are wired to look for patterns and make connections. I think it's a compliment when someone is reminded of art that they like when they check out my work, even if it's not art that I like.

I dont really have issues with my art style being compared, but I do take offense when I'm compared to [Marvel/DC] comic styles(yeah, that's where I mainly learned from) and it's that kind of analogy where folks want to crap on any artist who works in a superhero comic-like style. I can understand a person not liking it, but I also feel that "your opinion/feelings on a thing aren't warranted"- especially if they serve no purpose than taking jabs at the people who do like such things.

I don't mind. I've even found new artists that I like by this happening to me xD After all, someone with a similar style like mine likely makes stuff that I will enjoy.

I collect art styles like it was a hobby, so I don't mind people pointing it out at all. ^^ In fact, I often copy styles on purpose, especially for fan art, and it's kind of nice when people notice that extra bit of effort.

I only ever get compared to two: Moebius for comics and Thomas Kincaid for paintings. I'll take it I love both those guys. Those guys are awesome, and being compared to them tells me I'm on the right track in my art progression as I learn. So yeah, I like it, it's encouraging. Also I'm always looking for comps so it's helpful identifying the other works in my niche.

If someone would say my art looks like Sakimi-chan, WLOP or Ross Tran, i would feel honored, but nope, my art is either decent or too stiff.

I honestly think the people who complain about this all the time are humble bragging and it's like "Congrats, Karen, you get comments, we GET IT."

And I'm not saying you should do it, because a lot of artists really hate it but like...of all the things to be offended by, comparison is fine. They're not saying you stole someone else's art style.

Never really cared honestly. I've found styles, when looking, that remind me of another art style. Say someone has a disney-esque style, I'll notice it. I don't think those are things to see as insults, it's just insight.

If someone was to say I had a similar style to another artist, I'd be interested in what elements overlap for someone to think that. And whilst I understand why someone may dislike that kind of comment, I think it's too negative a perspective on the feedback. Do keep in mind most people don't know how to look at art down to the lines and curves, but they can feel when styles are similar (or they recognize someone's work).

I forgot about that. It can require quite a bit of skill too to pick up other art styles.

And like some others said, they can feel complimented when their work reminds someone of an artist they admire. Without it being a copy of course, just similar. I have artists I take inspiration from and want to draw like, so I'd be happy if someone said it's similar to Boichi or such

I wouldn't mind having my style compared to others, especially if it's an artist I like. Chances are, I am imitating someone better than me! In fact, I'd probably be ecstatic if somebody accused me of stealing from an artist I respect. My art style is a janky quilt of real practices I learned, shortcuts I came up with on my own, and quirks of other artists that I decided I liked.

I actually don't remember the last time this comparison thing happened to me. Truth be told, I think people are shy to draw comparisons because some artists handle comparison poorly, which is a real shame. I know what I'm actually stealing from, but I'd like to know what people THINK I'm stealing from.

I feel like people often use "anime" as a sort of a negative thing which is sad, and also ppl tend to lump all anime\manga into one big thing when every manga artist has their own art style and that art style gets passed down to the anime when \ if it gets adapted. like, Black Clover, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and say, One Piece, are all anime\manga but they look totally different.

and on topic, I can remember two instances where my art was compared to a piece of animation. One was Wakfu, and the other was my friend coming into my Discord DMs with official art picture of Eda the Owl Lady from the Owl House in her monster form and asking if I drew it. Landed me two good shows to watch lmaooo.

Third time was people comparing my art to some in-game artwork from Dragon Age. I don't like Dragon Age but the artwork in there is actually really beautiful, and it kinda I guess influenced me in a way.

other than that I can't really remember that happening. I wonder how obvious my influences actually are.
