Considerations When Making a New Chapter (+ New Episode Plug)

Hey all. I just finished working on the second chapter of my comic "Detective Jay" and I feel like I've gained a bit more of an understanding in regards to priorities when working on the comic going forward. Things like panel composition, keeping dialogue tight and relevant, having more varied shots to keep things interesting, etc etc. When working on a new chapter I try and make a list of things I want to pay special attention to, mainly things I feel I can improve on.

When it comes to your own comics/novels, what sort of things do you keep in mind when writing the next chapter? Have you had any experiences from writing a previous chapter that heavily shape the next one?

Well for my part I planed my story till the end. I left some space for sudden Ideas and inspiration but most of it is already planed. So in my case, chapters just kinda happen for separating the whole thing. But I try to kinda close the chapters. like when my characters where on the market, after the chapter is finished, the marketscene is closed.

I do the same. I got the whole "season" written in a simple way like just the important events. Then I write the script of the chapter. It's not a linear workflow. because I have 8 chapter written and in comic I have like 2 chapters and working on the third.

I tend to make a list of al the unsolved mysteries and important things that have been exposed in the previous chapter. This not only helps you avoid plot holes, but also prevent repetitive narration from happening.

I usually like to use cliff-hangers for my intro into my other chapters.

I give enough information in the previous chapter for people to know the situation, but not enough where they can predict the next one 110%.

I want them to still have questions and be relieved to know that said questions will be answered in the next part

I agree. It's especially useful if you have a brief hiatus between each chapter.
