Hello everyone!

Our Content and Community Guidelines have not been changed in a hot minute, so it is time for some necessary updates that support the current state of Tapas and our community! As a longtime user of the site, I’m quite happy about the overall adjustments, as they provide additional clarity on questions that have been raised in the past. None of these guidelines should come as a surprise, since they had been enforced for quite some time already - our new guidelines simply added more clear messaging and clarifications, while also removing some old, outdated rules and restrictions.

Please read our NEW Guidelines HERE!80

(If you would like to compare, you can read our old guidelines HERE.8)

These guidelines cover:

  • Respectful behavior
  • Content boundaries
  • Reporting and enforcement
  • Feedback

Please make sure to read the guidelines update in its entirety and post any questions you have afterwards here. Since I know some of your frequently asked questions, I will answer some of them to the best of my ability - These answers are meant to give you a bit more context.

  • Question: Do I lose any rights to my series when posting it to Tapas?
Answer: No, you keep 100% of all rights to your series when posting to Tapas.
  • Question: I’m writing a novel that contains sexual scenes, is that okay?
Answer: Yes, that is okay! Novelis have more leeway. Depiction of genitals or sex acts including penetration is permitted for novels, as long as its primary narrative purpose is something other than erotic satisfaction (Basically, your novel needs to have a plot other than sexual scenes). You will still have to mark your spicy episodes with the mature filter. Please refer to the “Mature Content” section for more information.
  • Question: I’m writing a comic that contains sexual scenes, is that okay?
Answer: While we allow a certain extent of violence, profanity and nudity as long as it is behind our Mature filter, uncensored depiction of extreme violence, human genitals or sex acts including penetration are not allowed in comics. So please censor these kinds of scenes and you are good to go! You will still have to mark your spicy episodes with the mature filter.
  • Question: I’m confused by the iOS3 and Android1 regulations. What is and isn’t okay?
Answer: Please always review the iOS and Android regulations if you want to ensure that your series will be viewable on both our apps and web. iOS and Android rules are more strict than our own guidelines and can change on a regular basis. For series appearing on our app, we have to enforce the app provider’s guidelines, but we will contact you and will work with you to make sure your series complies with the guidelines if you want to be shown on our apps.
  • Question: What happens if I don’t mark my episodes Mature when they should be, or if I don’t censor sex scenes?
Answer: In most cases, we will make your series inaccessible and then contact you to make appropriate changes. If you are a repeat offender, we will have to remove your account.
  • Question: The guidelines mention that Premium series follow different rules than free to read series. That doesn’t seem fair, why is that?
Answer: Each Premium series is heavily reviewed and/or edited by our team, meaning we know the series inside and out and ensure they don’t break app guidelines now or in future updates. Premium series that would break guidelines are moved into our Mature section on the website, which is hidden behind an age restriction.
  • Question: Can my series be part of the Mature section on the website, so I don’t have to censor any sexual scenes?
Answer: No, only premium series can be added to this section. Our team is very mindful of the series that are published in this section to ensure quality and that the series don’t cross any lines we don’t want to cross. This can only be done by working closely with our team.

If you have any additional questions and comments, feel free to leave them here - but I want to implore you again to read the full guidelines before doing so!

Happy creating!

Hey, regarding you saying uncensored genitals are not allowed in comics, up until now I have been under the impression that flaccid/unaroused/not sexually displayed lower body nudity is allowed to be left uncensored as long as it's behind a mature content warning. Has this changed?

For example if someone drew Näcken (a mythological creature that lures people into the lake using the allure of his music) in their comic, would they need to choose between lightsaber or a leg covering the naked bits?

YAY FOR CLARITY ON NOVELS!!! Thanks for the update, Tapas Team!! :raised_hands::raised_hands::raised_hands:

Sweet! At least we now knew the length of what we can or cannot do for sex scene now. :hype_01:

Oh, so now we can't have any genitals in what we depict, even if we don't care to be featured on the app? This is completely not consistent with what I was told when this site began. Of course, I'm not surprised; sites like this enjoy forming their foundations with the work of more daring authors, then they decide they're too good for us. Even when it's something completely mundane like nudity, which is not sex and cannot be legally conflated with it.

If that's the case, I'll be leaving the site, but I will certainly not be censoring my work any more than I already do. I wish I could say it was a pleasure, but it wasn't.

its generally more because tapas was removed from the apple play store multiple times at this point.

So?

I don't care. I don't work for Apple, and they don't compensate me for my work. I also didn't ask for inclusion in the app store, and additionally, Tapas have hidden us from results long before they had their app store issues. They deserve zero loyalty from someone they have never been willing to support.

They use our creative work to cash in, which we see a fraction of, if we see anything...which is unlikely and exceedingly rare.

Well, Tapas does need their app support, even more now that they get no money when ink is donated to artists. It does suck that it has to be like this, and I do hope your next place has more open guidelines, but that ends up happening eventually when the mobile audience is the biggest draw and you can't keep getting banned because Apple's moderation legitimately is horrible for everyone(re: Artstation getting banned for things they didn't show openly on the app but Apple insisted they did and didn't budge).

Hola! I'm actually going to revise my response regarding this. If you want to continue to show non sexual nudity and do not care to be shown on the app and only on web, that is okay!

However, we'll have to implement a way for creators to let us know when they want to use non-sexual nudity, so we can take them off the app. I'll work on that with my team next week to discuss how that can work best.

Will we be getting a notification somewhere besides these forums? I don't have this type of nudity as of now, but I never wanted to be part of the app, regardless of nudity.

I'm not here on the forum side very often: I have a lot of other stuff going on, so it'd be nice to know how to opt out of the app. It's confusing to me, because some stuff is announced here on the forums, but I feel it really should be announced on the comic part of this site (side-note: why are these separated like this? Are their plans to consolidate the updates/responses? Just curious).

Anyway, I hope we receive an update, because the last thing I want is to be accused of being non-compliant, when all policy changes are announced in the forum.

(Edit: This is not to say Tapas doesn't do the announcement elsewhere, this is just the first time I've even heard of the newer update. If it's not going to be announced in our feed, I think that's very negligible on Tapas: how can we comply, if we're not informed? And to be honest, I'm not super active in these forums and I think there are many others who are also not here a lot. I talk more to commenters and creators on their actual comic pages.)

Thank you for your time and response.

The update has been announced on the forums, on your creator dashboard (where it should be visible right now still) and on Twitter. If there are major changes, these will also be the channels through which you will be notified.

Ah, okay, I see it. I didn't realize that's where those announcements went. I prefer a "notification," but that's fine. I probably just missed it.

Thank you for your time.

Hey hi hello!

I remember that I told I do not want to participate in discussions anymore, so you can call my behavior inconsistent... but I just decided to make a change in my personal guidelines toward premium series discussions (yes, I constrantly change my guidlines. But, of course, only for the best of reasons, to make Tapas even better place  ). :relieved:

Today I wanted to discuss new guidelines applications to a beautiful premium series

Funny comics, btw. Well-developed sci-fi style, good art quality. I read it and even spent ink on buying it.
BUT I can't forget how in the very first issue of it I saw...
...the issue.

I didn't put it under "mature" tag for the only very reason - because it wasn't put under mature tag in original Premium series, which itself is not in Mature section either. I believe, that even if my rotten mind see here a beautiful male's private part, it's not what creators meant. :relieved: They wouldn't violate honest and thoughtful community guidelines about not-sexual nudity, right?
So, probably, it's actually not a private part, but just android's secret weapon or something? What do you think?

Perhaps the line should be amended to say "uncensored depiction of extreme violence, detailed human genitals or sex acts including penetration are not allowed in comics"?
Cuz I say that's basically on the level of Crayon Shin-chan, and it's somewhat obfuscated by the mist. Also this episode came out way before the new guidelines did.

It still wasn't hid in app or even put mature tag on this episode, though. :sip:
