I feel like whenever we talk about things that are hard to draw, it just turns into an echo chamber of 'feet', 'cars', 'hands'...nothing new under the sun. So I wanted to start a topic for things you actually can draw, even though they're hard, or are usually considered such. Feel free to brag about anything you want~

I already mentioned how much I love hands in that tutorial topic, but tbh that's not really a LOT of effort, especially considering the styles I draw in. There's only so much time you can spend on five fingers and a palm...the one limiting factor on my ability, patience, usually doesn't get a chance to run out.

What challenges me are things that test my patience by requiring a lot of time-- no matter how talented you are, you can't finish painting a head full of hair strand by strand in 5 minutes. You need to be able to stay focused and think through what you're doing for quite a while...meanwhile, I always get lost, forget what I was going for, and worst of all, run out of motivation. >_<

There's one thing that I can draw where that doesn't happen, however: SPARKLIES

I spent at least 2 hours (probably longer) just working on all those crystal hearts for these comic pages, and I did them all in one session so I wouldn't lose my flow. And I loved every second of it~ ^^

I mean, I won't lie, it was a little annoying to have to keep rendering it again and again (I'm still human). And I didn't have as much fun in the far away shots, where the reflections get all mushed up together into little pixel clouds. But surprisingly, I never hit that point I usually do where I go "I WOULD RATHER DIE THAN DRAW ONE MORE X"...and when I'm drawing hair strands that usually happens within minutes, sometimes seconds.

I think it's the contrast that makes it work for me. ^^ It's pleasing to the eye, and to my artistic soul, enough to make me want to do it again and again.

Most super detailed fields (grass, hair, wood grain, wrinkles in cloth) are relatively monotonous in color, often because there are so many in one spot (grass and hair do have a sheen, but not a lot, and especially not when you're looking at them in macro).
Crystals, however-- and things like chains, metal accessories-- you need those bright points of light and deep spots of darkness, and LOTS of them, in order to make them look correct. Especially en masse...the heart only has 'pixel clouds' for highlights because the individual crystals assemble into a smooth surface (like a puzzle). If they were just randomly gathered into the overall shape of a heart, it'd probably look a little different...and part of me would love to try to figure out how to render that. ^^

Since I don't have that much time on my hands to spend on my artwork these days, though I've never particularly felt like I've had enough time, there aren't many things I would devote hours to. The two things would have to be 1) lighting effects and 2) tattoos (for one character specifically).
When I say lighting effects, I don't mean highlights on like objects and clothes, I mean more in line with special effects like with magic or water.
For example:

The fire and water effects I do when drawing my comic. I spent a lot of time trying to balance making them look believable, but so detailed that it would take too much time to draw.

Same thing with the fire and ice in this scene.

These two didn't take as long to do in terms of time, but there was still plenty of thinking involved in how they would work.

Next, tattoos and body markings. I have a few characters with tattoos, and unfortunately I'm a person obsessed with consistency. So if they have tattoos, no matter how detailed :sweat_01: or simple , I'm going to try to keep them as accurate as possible.

At the moment? Nothing special really. I do want to learn to draw metal and vehicles better so I can utilize that skill for one of my comics.

Everybody here's doing really well! Keep that confidence and motivation!

I like drawing detailed mechanical things sometimes, and sprawling perspective shots, and I love drawing action and destruction! I really like drawing things that have a sense of motion! I like things that I can get lost in and drop into a flow with. Here's a handful of my favorite panels from the last couple issues (some of them are unreleased, so I omitted the dialog from those shhhhh)

@igneriss your illustrations are simple but gorgeous :D!
Everyone's stuff is so cool >u<!!!!!!!!!!
So lovely and so well drawn +a+!

For me it's faces

Sometimes I don't put that much effort into them to save time, but generally I'll try to make them as detailed as I can. I just love how expressive faces can be. Whenever I sketch or doodle, it's usually faces. I want people to look at my characters, and when they look at them, I want them to see how they're feeling and what they're thinking right there on their faces. I don't usually put as much effort into things like outfits, hands, or backgrounds, just because I don't feel like those are as important to the story I'm telling.

I'd like to get better at things like backgrounds, hair, animals, etc, but I don't really like gound out of my way to practice and study all this stuff. I'll watch some videos about it if I want some general tips, but for the most part I like figuring it out as needed. I kinda feel like trying to figure out how to draw something on the spot that looks good enough to be kept in my comic forces me to come up with solutions to drawing them better than if I was trying to figure it out on my own time.

Detailed/complicated or not, I actually do love hands.

They may not be highly detailed, but getting hands right can be HARD, because if they're wrong, it's obvious. Same with expressions-- nailing an expression with just a few lines is hard. And because faces are so familiar, when it's wrong, it's obvious.

But I'm also a sucker for a really detailed, lush background sometimes.

And then, of course, I have a love/hate relationship with complicated lighting.

And it's all traditional art (markers), too, so once I move past the pencil lines, I get one shot to get any of this right. Wheee!

Hands and feet...oh, oh, and shoes :joy:
Unfortunately, while I can draw a lot of things that are considered hard, more often than not I don't like drawing them. But when it comes to characters stuffing their emotional faces in my camera, I bloom and thoroughly enjoy the process.

I generally enjoy drawing pretty detailed stuff, I am always under impression it makes my art better and it's hard to get over this idea

2 years later

Probably faces, clothes/armor and hands, maybe add tiny details no one cares about on the list too lol
