Here goes my 2 cents (more like an anecdote i think)
I've always struggled with pencil and markers/microns, tought it was a really noble medium and wanted my comic that way, i became pretty good with my tablet though, and each day i was more convinced to make my comics completely digital, then i started reading scott Pilgrimm, and thought that was i was looking for was completely possible, but i still was having problems with pens and markers (and ultra scared of getting into brushes, you know, like real life brushes)
And then i read Blankets and Habibi by Craig Thompson. Everything changed (seriously if you haven't read both books go get them, it's a whole new comic book storytelling experience). I was completely astonished with what can be made with brushes and pen-brushes.
Now i'm 100% working on getting better at traditional story-telling, it's really hard and you gotta buy a lot of ink but it's really satisfying to have one page almost blacked out in your own art
