Discord severs where comic artists can unite?

I tend to use discord a lot so it'd be nice to find a community there where comic artists can hang out! Preferably a small or average community so that way I'll get to know people better ^-^

Do you guys know any community like that?

I too would like to know the answer to this. Even forums are hard to find these days. An age of the internet has passed.

Personal experience am mixed. Am being kicked out of Discord server for being "classist." Am trying to explain that virtual tip jar am being terrible business model for full-time artist.

If you type 'discord' in the search, you'll see that a couple of users have started a chat. I'd start there.

Also, @33rdCenturyCaveman you're not wrong. One would basically be relying on the kindness of others when they should be charging for some kind of content to live sustainably.

I agree as well. Though, if most of us tried to do that then our work would never be seen :\ The tip jar, while an awful system, does allow smaller creators to be visible while making some money and that makes a larger incentive for more people to put their work out there.

Well I have some severs I'm in that are small

They are a bit quiet but it's the time of year I think.

These two are for general artists. But there are a few for writers and such. And Beta has a few she runs that are tapas and webtoons centered.

Some money, yes, but not enough to live off of. Commissions, Patreon, Kofi (premium), selling goods.... that's how one could be a full-time artist. Tip jars suit people looking to cover the cost of supplies (maybe)

If it am payment-optional then it am tip jar. So Patreon mebbe and mebbe not tip jar depending on if exclusive.

EDIT: It possible am kicked out by Discord people because am not explaining self well. It possible they am take offense when am say that asking for tips am high-effort begging.

It am happening a while ago. Feel bad for nice lady that am inviting me. Like I said, am probably explaining point badly. It go like this: In oversupplied market, it am essential that artist am maintaining dignity in order for audience to be taking them seriously. Without dignity, artist am unable to command respect or mebbe set high prices. Value exist in eye of beholder, and eye of beholder am being amenable to marketing and branding.

However, if product am available for free, payment-optional, then it am difficult to be establishing value higher than zero. It free, after all and "free" am other way of saying "worthless."

Discord people am then protest, saying that busking for tips am time-honored way to be making artistic living. Am countering with two points: Firstly, despite skill and effort involved, street-performing am still high-effort form of begging, and begging am not dignified. Secondly, performing on street am fundamentally different from posting content on Internet. In former case, artist am interacting directly with audience. Mebbe more importantly, natural flow of busking am geared toward paying. When organ-grinder monkey come around with hat, it take effort not to be giving donation. Latter case am totally different: natural flow of online consumption am to be moving on without disbursement of funds.

Unfortunately am being kicked out before having opportunity to explain second point.

I'm not sure what you mean, I'm having some trouble parsing what you're saying - no worries as I know not everyone's first language is English or anything.

Is this to do with posting work online for free and asking for tips, or pricing commissions cheaply? Because street-busking isn't at all equivalent to being an artist online, I agree, but commissions aren't normally a good way to make money long-term unless you are both very expensive and very popular.

Mebbe part of what offended them am the insinuation that it am no longer possible to make living as artist, at least not for vast majority. There am simply too many artist offering content for low low price of free. It hard to compete with that. Paradoxically it harder to compete if own product am also free.

Virtual tip jar am okay for hobbyist who mebbe looking for bit of pin money, mebbe reimbursement for art supplies. It am also okay for making money off fanart -- it way to make profit without directly selling somebody else's intellectual property. And if you am receiving tips for content exclusive to that platform, then you am not using platform as tip jar, but as storefront.

Point being, virtual tip jar am no substitute for direct selling. With direct selling, it possible to make living as full-time artist. With virtual tip jar, it also possible to make living as full-time artist, but only if very very popular.

Comic tea party! Webcomic book clubs, comic storms, critique and general talk about webcomic creating. It's pretty active.

Webtoons canvas! Very active (almost too many people imo). Webcomic-specific discussion channels, general talk, and a lot of webcomic readers as opposed to only creators.

Smackjeeves server! Sort of a replacement for the forums that were shut down. Active, and there are some great artists there giving advice.
