Do you ever feel like you were born in the wrong decade?

I know I do. Don't get me wrong, the 90's were awesome but as an adult I feel so out of place some days. I often feel like I was supposed to be in the 60s or 70s but I most identify with pre-medieval ages, way before the Roman empire. I often fantasize that if I was able to time-travel to that era I would live in a hut, in ancient Ireland or Scotland, and spend my time perfecting botany and being the village's wisewoman and storyteller. I've read tons of articles, textbooks, fables about the ancient world and I would definitely give up modern society in a heart beat if I had the choice to go back in time.

I've had this conversation a ton of times with my husband and friends, but some don't feel the same way I do. So I wanted to bring this topic to you guys.

If you had a time machine and you were able to go back to the era you most identify with, would you? And if you could, what profession would you take up? If you don't feel this way, please share your thoughts!

This is just a fun little topic so let's play nice :')

EDIT: This topic is just for fun! Take logic out completely. If you were able to time travel and wouldn't have to worry about gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference, etc...would you time travel in the past or future? These are what fantasies are anyway! They don't have to make sense :')

Can I got to future decades? Cause I'm feeling like I was too young to do all the cool things happening in the Late 90's/Early 2000s, and then there was just... a lull. Not a lot of cool and affordable technology or other cool things.

And now, all the cool stuff is coming out, sure. But I want to born in a decade where things like Hololen's and virtual reality (AND ROBOTS) have been perfected so I could be birthed and hop right into the cool things XP a technological revolution of sorts. I don't know what kind of profession I'd take up... Probably something still art related.

The thing about older decades is, they don't sound like a whole lot of fun. Go back a few decades and there's nothing to do but have babies and clean the house. I might have tolerance for the 80s. Just a few more decades back and there's slavery and/or worse racism. But if you go back too far, everyone's dying and sick and has no sense of personal hygiene. And even farther, everything wants to kill you >.> I dunno, just my opinion on the whole "different decade" thing.

I'm attracted to some typical European History and I'd like to visit some of it like the Renaissance in Italy, 18th century France, Edwardian and Victorian England and so on. But honestly, being an East Asian and a woman, I think I fit right in the 21st century because I can be almost anywhere I wanna be without being questioned, lol.

IF you gave me a tool that can disguise me as whatever sex and ethnicity I want along with the time machine, then yeah, I'd be down for it. But only for less than a week. For reasons that may be a little too practical for a fun topic such as this like.. I might accidentally leave behind knowledge, items or an illness people in the past have yet to be immune to and change the course of history or I might catch something my body isn't immune to. Plus, I'm pretty hygienic so I'm not sure if I wanna get used to mediaeval methods of sanitisation (GAAHH, so many diseases in the past could have been lessened or prevented if shit was clean).

All the time unfortunately. I was born in the mid 80s but I actually wish I was born in the 60s or early 70s so I could have been a teenager in the 80s. Man, the 80s were a magical time to be a teen from what i've researched! I hope that there's an 80s variant to the afterlife that I can go to hehe.

Guys, the funny thing is if you go far back into the past, the new/advanced bacteria you bring would kill those around you (think pilgrims and native americans) or too far in the future you could get sick although they'll most likely have a cure.

Trust me, the 80's sucked so hard, that the 90's seemed like an utopia.
Constant threat of nuclear war, everything had guitar solos and synth drums, computers were stupidly slow and limited, and everything, yes EVERYTHING, had mullets and bushy moustaches.

I guess the 80's made me appreciate what we have now.

I really wouldn't want to be born any further back than I was.

Honestly wish I was born closer to now's times, where being an interracial kid isn't considered a bad thing and sexualities and transgenders are (generally... not always) more open and accepted. Though I guess if you went reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally far back in some cultures it wasn't as big an issue as it was after colonization and what not, but then life expectancy and dying from stuff that's preventable today is not really appealing so...

I might daydream sometimes about hanging out in Constantinople during the reign of Justinian (only can we please skip the part with the bubonic plague turning the city into a disgusting slaughterhouse) but then I think no, that'd be nice for a week, but then I would want to go home to where there's running water and modern medicine and where I as a woman have voting rights and the right to own property and choose who - or if! - I marry, and what religion to belong or not belong to. The endless arguing about religion would get on my nerves pretty dang quickly.

Like, imagine having serious period-cramps in an era where painkillers weren't as readily available. Imagine giving birth in an era when the most popular method of making sure a woman survived the ordeal was a really hard prayer. Imagine getting serious tooth-pains in a society where dentistry was basically a set of pliers and some good luck.

And, as mentioned, the bubonic plague was a thing, and it liked to come back every 15-20 years and wipe out as many people as it could. And the bubonic plague was seriously a horror show. During the worst outbreak in Constantinople, they had to dig massive burial pits straight across the Golden Horn, and they still couldn't fit all the putrified bodies of the dead inside, because literally tens of thousands of people died. Some of them were just left... slowly liquefying in the streets.

I'm just gonna stay here in 21st century Sweden and count my blessings.

lol this thread made me giggle. ( was born in the 70's) and before some of you go running to a time machine give my comic a read because bits of it are based on the 70's . mostly the bits about getting in trouble and the different attitudes from parents and teachers.No groundings or loss of cell phone just lots of trouble and whacks with a slipper if you stepped out of line. (then you had to face going home!)

personally I used to want to be around in the 50's when Elvis and rock n roll was at it's height.

As for other parts of history well I would like to pop around and "tinker" with history.

Not really, I feel like I was born in the right decade but the only thing I cannot stand about it is when I see stupid posts that are all like "HASHTAG 90's KIDS!!"

I do feel I was born like 20 years late. I was born early 80's but I feel that I should've been born in the 60's since all of the stuff that interests me are in the 70's. All the music I like are those Saturday Night Fever types. Heck even the car I drive is 70's, around a decade older than me.XD

Have felt like that from time to time. Most of the things I like the most are older than me. Was born in 1987, but when I was younger I often felt that I should have been born around 1950 instead. It would have been fun to experience all the things I like when they was new. I would love to have been able to walk into a car dealer in the late 60's or early 70's and drive away with something I can only dream of owning now. Or go to a concert when all of my favourite bands were at their creative peak. But that probably wouldn't always have happened so easily, since I live in a country who were lagging a bit behind.There is also a chance that I would feel the same about an earlier period if I were born back then. But back then I wouldn't have been able to do what I do now, so I'm pretty happy that things turned out this way after all. I still get to drive around in cars from the 60's and 70's and see many of my favourite bands live. And I can choose to just avoid all of the annoynig junk that I don't like about the past and only focus on the good things.. Plus I get everything that was good from the 90's like the Super Nintendo and Playstation 1. And of course the internet. And I get to feel nostalgic about all of it.

And I hope you didn't take it a wrong way by what my first sentence in the first post ^^; I only meant that I'm grateful for being born when I was, not trying to highlight it at all <3. I wasn't trying in the least to push the 90s decade on anyone since the 90s weren't all that great, no decade is perfect. <3

I hear this sentiment a lot when I was in historical fashion groups (Victorian-Georgian Era). Usually it's a romanticized desire of "a simpler time" (that doesn't actually exist) more often than not they teeend to be white people fantasizing about these things. A couple of people here mentioned stuff like "as a woman" or "as a non-white person" they don't like the idea of going to the past because of rights and rules at the time. I'm also not fond of going to the past (as a non-white lady!) and I've heard the same feeling being shared in black groups as well. They openly expressed not wanting to go back to a time as late as the 60s or 70s.

Maybe I should've made this into a game instead ^^; I think some people are taking this a bit too seriously. Though I don't have a degree in history, it's pretty much common sense that older eras weren't generous to most people around the world. I merely brought up this topic for harmless fun and for us to fantasize regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, etc...I wanted to see how much people's imaginations would take them without the worry of those constraints during those times. Since fantasizing goes with the emotion desire, there's not a lot of logic when we indulge our fantasies hence why my first post was so insane haha! :')

I'm sorry if I didn't make this clear in my first post, and I'm sorry for any miscommunication. I'm also sorry if I offended anyone with the making of this topic, this wasn't my intention at all.
