Do you guys write scenes you know you will throw away?

If there is a scene you are working on and you know that it doesn't work, would you still write it just because you set the intention of writing every day? I guess I could always go back and change it, but if I know something isn't working, would it be bad to waste time writing it in the first place?

Sometimes. It's simply because I might reuse dialogue or ideas from that scene and want to finish my thoughts. It can also help me see more clearly what my issues are if I'm not sure.

No, if I notice a scene doesn't work I stop writing it and start thinking "why doesn't it work". Then I begin figuring out a way to make it work or just scrap it entirely.

I often write scenes and even get as far as thumbnailing them out with the knowledge they may not make it into the final product. I don't necessarily go in knowing I'll throw them away, but I treat any scene as potentially disposable if it isn't the most efficient, effective or entertaining way to get across the necessary info, even if it has jokes or moments I really like in it. Sometimes it isn't obvious a scene doesn't work until you can look at it from the broader perspective of a chapter, or see how many comic pages it will actually turn into, or how many pages of the comic will be two people in the same place, talking and so not visually interesting, etc.

I recently wrote a whole chapter, thought it was too intense and felt like I was disrespecting my character, rewrote the whole thing with a better idea. I've done this many times. But yes, I keep rewriting my scenes, lines, even chapters, until it's perfect.

If I 100% know for certain that the scene will never be used for anything (including side stuff, being reskinned as a scene from a different work, etc), then no, I don't continue writing it Even if I set the intention of writing every day, I'd rather work on things I might actually use. (I don't see why you wouldn't, unless you also insist on writing in chronological order or something? ... actually that doesn't quite make sense to me either ...)

I’ve written things and thrown them away, but I wouldn’t write things knowing in advance that I was going to throw them away.

That said, I do draw things knowing that they won’t be seen. For example, I recently drew a throne room for a background, complete with throne inspired by the one used by Napoleon, and then covered it with foreground action. Another time I drew a whole Cape-Cod style house with detail right down to the wood grain in the siding and the asphalt shingles on the roof, then covered all but a small part of it with foreground imagery. Thanks to the magic of layers, though, I still have the original backgrounds.

I wrote stuff that I had to completely re-vamped because at the time that I wrote it I was so focus on getting to the mid-way point of the saga or my "favorite parts". I didn't like how the two characters met and how their relationship flourished... There was an embarrassing amount of disjointed dialogue between them and not a lot of scenes to support that relationship. It was almost like I grabbed two actions figures, smooshed their faces together, and bellowed at the top of my lungs. "YOU ARE MARRIED NOW!" Who needs context?

Anyways, I feel like it is okay to do that. At least putting something down is better than nothing and you can still use the "throw away" parts as idea fodder. You read it, keep some parts you like and cut out the ugly bits. Just post when you have a solid episode.

Though...not all episodes can be great...especially when Tapas cuts me off before a really cool scene starts.

Usually I don't to keep focus and not waste time.
But sometimes I do, if I was busy doing something else and needed to get back into the headspace of the characters involved in the scene/episode. I know I'd throw it away so never spend too much time on it. In some cases I'd borrow lines from it too if it better helps convey the actual scene.

Sometimes i'll be writing a scene and halfway through I realize that it probably wont make it to the final cut, or i'll be missing something in the scene, or it'll just feel werid so I know i'll have to scrap it or rewrite it later. I'll always finish writing it though, so that way I can move on to the next scene. I'll leave the editing/rewriting for later.
