I'm sorry, do you know anything about the Polanski case? I know Niah146 would rather us get off such a topic but your ignorance on the whole issue (Not you Niah) because if you did, you'd know exactly why Polanski left.
It might be easier for you to specifically search it. Just Google "Polanski Court Case" or "Polanski Judge Issue" and you'll find a lot of things. Essentially what happened was that Polanski pleaded guilty to certain sexual misconduct charges with Samthana Geimer (Known as Gailey back then IIRC) and he basically had a plea bargain agreed.
I can't remember what that plea bargain was exactly but again, quick research will fix that. The judge at the time "Lawrence J. Rittenband" though apparently was going to deny this offer and was going to sentence Polanski to 50 years or jail or something. In 2008, one of the ex-prosecutors for the Polanski case admitted he had lied about the case. One way or the other, things got heated and Polanaski's attorney was like.
"You can't trust these guys." So Polanski since then made it to escape the USA. He could no longer put trust in the United States judiciary system. Since then he has made atonement for his crimes with Geimer. Basically, Polanski made his amends to Geimer but had no intentions of doing anything with the US court system.
They screwed him over and I don't blame him one bit for not wanting to be a part of that. The trust is lost and I'd be exactly the same. I would no longer trust that system that nearly screwed me over. For me, it is no longer Polanski's job to make up for fleeing, it up to the US system to make it up to Polanski for trying to screw him out of his plea bargain.
And as I've noted, Geimer has long since forgiven Polanski. She has even tried to get a judge in 2017, Judge Scott Gordon, to drop the case. Geimer has stated that the effect of the Polanski case has been so detrimental to her that it has caused her more harm than anything Poloanski did.
