Do you prefer happy or sad or bittersweet endings

Of course the writer should create what they think is the best ending but I like bittersweet endings myself, especially if the story is slightly darker.

I do find myself rolling my eyes when characters end up with the people they're set up with at the near beginning (with little chemistry) and they end up having a nuclear family at the end/epilogue. -coughHarryPotterandNarutocough-

It depends of the story. For an idealistic one i prefer happy endings, but for a darker work, i may prefer a sad one.
I probably prefer bittersweet endings, but it depends mostly if the ending makes sense with the story and the events that happened.

Bittersweet definitely. I tend to find happy endings hard to believe. The only times I like happy endings are in romance stories, and even then I like to see bittersweet moments leading up to it. There's just more emotion that I can latch onto.

I think most stories are building towards something. If a story is building towards a bittersweet or sad ending, and then ends happily somehow, it feels cheap, and I don't like it. If a story is building towards a happy, triumphant ending and then veers off to sad one at the last minute, that also feels cheap -- a cheap and meaningless pull for emotion. A story leading to a happy or sad ending that tries to pull its punches to be bittersweet can feel disingenuous, like it was scared to be totally honest.

That said, I do tend towards stories that allow for happy or bittersweet endings!

It depends on the story. Even if it's a love story, if the theme of it was kind of sad to begin with, I'm all for bringing on the tears. For the most part, it really is based on whether or not the ending feels "out of place". If the ending comes out of left field, I'm gonna be mad regardless of what style of ending it was.

Though, to be honest, I find it refreshing when stories end tragically, or open ended. (I seriously love open ended stories).

Whatever ending it is when then "villian" wins. I love a villian you hate the entire time and then they come up on top. I like sad emotional endings.

Happy with either happy/sad/bittersweet, as long as the journey there is a good lead up to the way it ended.

I would like a happy ending for a dark world.
Like the character went through a thousand things and finally found happiness in the end.

Bittersweet if it's a cautionary tale.

I don't care if it's happy, sad or bittersweet too much as long as it makes sense to the story.

Like if it's a really heavy and dramatic story an ending where everyone skips into the sunset would feel like there was no thought put into it to me. In the same breath a lighthearted story where it's more of a comedy, ending with everyone dying and distrusting each other, would be confusing...?

For me it depends on the flow of the story overall. Some stories are and should end in a bittersweet or sad ending, is how they were crafted. But I sometimes prefer happy ending as long as it fit the style of the story/comic.

personally I think it depends on the storie and context, example:

suicide squad, the girl should have died, it's an R, it's in the real world and there should be consecuences >:C- sad

Supernatural- Should have ended with Sam in the cage and Dean free, right now it's just a parody of its formal self (though it's still a great show just not the same supernatural as in the start C:) -bittersweat

Pokemon- ASH BEATING A FRIGGIN TOURNAMENT!!!!>o< - Happy

I think my only preference to endings is in romantic stories, which might be strange since I don't purposefully encounter so much of that in any medium. But, I think of the end of La La Land which I saw this summer and I was devastated by the bittersweet ending, and I felt really bad. In contrast, I think of a book called Future Leaders of Nowhere about two girls falling in love at an outdoors leadership program and that ended up with them together in a mutually benefiting relationship, which made me happy.

In other genres I will take whatever kind of ending suits the buildup of the story. But in romance stories, I want there to be a happy ending. It gives me hope that I'll find someone to love and be in a relationship with someday.

Personally I think that popular media is a bit saturated with happy endings. Sometimes it's warranted/earned, especially when the main characters have gone through many trials and tribulations (the Ip Man movies as an example) but a lot of the time it has cliche/predictable happy ending at best, Deus ex machina like forced happy ending at worst. It feels unearned, dissatisfying, and doesn't fit the theme of the story. Sometimes it's kinda creepy how forced it is. Frankenweenie is an example that pissed me off a lot and I don't really see people talk about it.

So right now I prefer sadder endings, especially well written ones (duh lol).

I love happy endings! It's always nice to see their struggle come to fruition and it's also interesting how authors make a "happy" ending in different ways. But bittersweet endings are nice, too. Sad endings can be a bit too much for me lol. But I like sad endings when it's done with substance and not just for the sake of a sad ending.

I'd say it depends on the story, but I think I prefer bittersweet. More often than not characters go through horrible things in stories (at least the ones I read) and I hate seeing that it has no impact on them, and it can feel like an easy out to just go with the happy ending.

But sometimes a happy ending is the best ending for a story, or a very sad one, for a tragedy. I just vote for the right ending for the individual story :3
