Won't be surprised. We all get ideas from somewhere and don't always credit the source. Just repackage and it's "original" idea

I don't completely hold to the mindset that there's "no such thing as an original idea" but it's not uncommon for a lot of people to have similar ideas but execute those ideas in drastically different ways. And there probably is a non-zero chance that an idea may come from somewhere else including indie works but it shouldn't be some detractor for making a thing either

isekai has a ton of similarities within the genre but people still make isekai stories. the same of romance. the same of shounen. and so on and so forth. either way there are still stories who manage to stand out even with those similarities so all anyone can do is to continue to create

Okay so it's not like industry professionals aren't looking at the stories many online people create, it's just that our ideas are being recycled?

They or their team look at all kind of media, movie, books etc and that´s what they all use
to generate new ideas. Even the most innovative art movie directors who come up with
unique art movies still recylce stories / parts of stories they are inspired by.

People who pull from similar inspirations will write stories with similar motifs.

Steven Universe is not the only story that named characters after rocks. Harry Potter is not the only story about magical wizard/witch school. Avatar is not the only story that uses the 4 elements as powers for their characters.

I remember when Inception came out and people were claiming it ripped off a bunch of other works. However, I don't think traveling into someone's dreams is an original idea. I think it is something that a lot of people wonder about.

It is almost always just parallel thought. I have worked in and around people in these industries and related industries for years and most creatives….. enjoy being creative and thinking of stuff on their own. I think as far as commercially successful tv and film there are “no new ideas” but new ways of presenting and remixing old ideas. There’s always gonna be overlap.

I remember Inception being called out for “copying” Paprika because of the dream concept despite them having different plots and themes. But I also remember what upset was a few key shots and sequences that seemed like they pulled directly from Paprika which has happened before with Satoshi Kon’s work.

Sometimes it depends on the industry. I went to an art school in minneapolis with John Statema who used to draw for marvel comics.

No work is 100% original. You can always borrow, but your own touch is what makes the difference. However, animators wouldn't risk stealing a story online because people aren't stupid; they'll find out, and legal problems will arise.

I agree completly. No animator wants to get into legal trouble as long that animator isn´t too stupid or overconfident if the creator lives on the other side of the planet.
And yes - no work is 100% original. So many stories have been made that I have a feeling noting completly new could actually be created (maybe except the based on a true event stories).

And the same goes for my story. When I look at it from this perspective - it is not a copy of anything, but some aspects were influenced by other stories - both anime and tv shows. Sometimes in were character traits, sometimes visual appearences, sometimes the fighting styles or some places parts of the story takes place...

Yes, I think this happens all the time. Disney is notorious for flat out copying other's work and calling it "Original". I think the bigger the studio the more likely they are going to try to rip off someone else's work because they already have lawyers to fight any legal cases. And the less known the person is, the more likely the big studio will just copy and paste their work. With AI this problem is getting worse. Now many artists "poison" their art so it messes with AI scrapers. I think as lesser known writers and artists, we need to do what we can to make sure we actually get credit for the hard work we do.

I feel like 99.9% of the time, you would need to be quite delusional to think that a multi-billions dollar company ‘stole’ your idea. It probably is not true, you just feel entitled to the same success that the supposedly ‘unoriginal’ creation received, and it is a product of a defensive mindset that your own story is the most special creation on earth and people just don’t recognise your ‘genius’.

The creators who actually work for the corporation have their own ideas of what they would like to create so why would they waste time stealing a story from someone else when they have the opportunity to tell their own.

If you notice similarities, the most likely explanation is simply coincidence or convergent evolution.

If you are afraid of posting online because you are scared of Disney stealing it, I will tell you that you are being a bit unreasonable.

Why would they target you when there are like thousands of other online creators? If you think it is because your work is "so amazing and good" why would you think not ever publishing it will benefit you in anyway?

A lot of beginners have this concern and I often feels like they often over hype the quality of their work and get paranoid that everyone will steal it.

Crypto-bros and AI "artists" are more likely to steal from works posted online than Disney.

Most currently working professional writers got their start as online writers, so there's plenty of cross pollination there. But everyone takes inspiration from everything! Far more webnovels and webtoons are ripoffs of popular anime or movies.
