Do you think of yourself more as an artist or writer?

I'm way more of an artist, my only reason to draw is because I just enjoy it and I pretty much never thought about stories or any of that sort until middle school really. Also I don't think I'm a strong writer, especially when it comes to the plot but I think I'm better at writing characters and I try to make my comics more character heavy rather than plot so I got that going for me which is nice.

I'm with the 'storyteller' team! Though more of an artist, I suppose. I love creating stories, but writing them down was a hell to me, haha CX unless I was really inspired.

I agree on the storyteller concept. I'm foremost an artist but I really though hard about the story of my comic. I really didn't want it to be all visual and no story. I also always consider my art as my way of communication. I want to tell a story that impacts people but I can't do it unless there's a visual that goes with it.

Cool to see this question answered as it can be hard if you have to categorise yourself as one or the other sometimes.
For me writing was always the thing I loved and had an affinity for, and art was just NOT something I could do. I really loved manga though, and writing, so I over-came my no-art ability so that I could draw enough to do this job. I'm still not great- but I work on improving all the time. So I maybe think I naturally a writer, but feel like I spend more time as an artist?
Cool discussion here though- interesting to see everyones responses.

I am storyteller. I've been drawing since I was a kid but only started writing on and off 3 years ago (mainly shorts). Funnily, writing seems to feel more natural to me over the years as oppose to drawing but I really do enjoy dabbling in both. But, I do notice a certain pattern in my own works: I'd usually prefer drawing it out if it's something action-based and writing it out if it's romance-based.

I'd say I'm 50/50. If I can get away with drawing it rather than writing it I'll always opt to do that, in the same way that writers aim to show, not tell. But I do love writing dialogue. Serge is my favourite to write at the moment. He comes naturally to me.

I'll go with storyteller! since I started drawing, it's always been around creating characters and stories. Though if I had to choose, I'd say I'm leaning more towards art...mostly because I'm terrible at writing prose I love communicating stories and ideas, but I talk in pictures.

I'm definitely a writer over an artist. The only things I can kind of draw well are (strangely enough) hands, and like scenery, people are just like a big no no for me (hence why I havent actually posted anything lol), but writing on the other hand. That's easy peezy (well I shouldn't say it's EASY as much as it comes naturally if that makes any sense).

Can't tell if i'm both or neither...OR just one of them! Uhhhahah. I cant' always draw what i wish, so I kinda have to write around that. I can draw MOST of what i want to draw, but not with the amount of detail i want, nor with an dynamic view. And there's an unbelivable amount of trial and error. Luckily I end up satisfied with MOST of my panels in the end. (As Long as I dont compare them to anyone else, hehe).

For writing, however, i've never worried (unlike drawing). I never sitt around and ask myself "What Will happen next" or "what will that character say next". If i feel nothing while writing, i'll start over whitout thinking too much about it. If i re-read what i write whitout it touching any of my feelings, i'll re-write! BUT if i smile to myself, if i feel any tension, or if It makes me slightly sad, then i'll KEEP IT! Simple as that. XD

I like to think of myself as an entertainer. I only do my comic to entertain people. If Youtube existed when I started drawing, perhaps I'd be doing videos or music instead. Comics was the only viable option I had at the time.

I see a lot of two-hatters here, it's awesome! Especially what with the storytelling method @shazzbaa mentioned. I believe we're all first and foremost storytellers. Whether we're writing or drawing our story or someone else's, it's an inner spark that drives us to convey something. And the work process is wonderfully streamlined when you have two people on a project. I think it all comes down to the audience, though. Whatever strong suite you have would be at the viewer's discretion.

But in the end, I love writing and I love inking. I'm merging them together in comics format. Rather haphazardly! ^o^

At the moment, I think I am a better writer. I am still improving my art.

Writer! Telling stories is why I actually started drawing and why I worked to get better at it. Truth be told, making art for the visual sake of art, without any story attached, is pretty boring for me.

For a long time I considered my strongest asset to be my writing, complicated stories are my thing, tbh. The ones where you have to go back to the beginning to notice how you had been spoiled since day 1 what the plot twists were all about...that. >v>

My degree centers on storytelling for the media, and art was just on the side when I decided to take it seriously just about 4 years ago or so. But I think I'm doing well enough to start aiming for both...? Art is just a tool for me to express myself, I'm also trying to expand in terms of animation and even video games.

I have definitely just "one hat" - the art.
My previous attempts to make a comics failed before beginning because I did not know how to write a good story. But half a year ago my friend said "We are going to make a comic together." Of course that my answer was like "No way, I am a s*itty artist. It needs to much skills which I dont have" but she come with a perfect script after few days and it was the best thing which happend to me this year...

I'm also on the artist side. Writing isn't exactly my strong points tbh. I can think of stories for my characters but I sometimes find it hard to piece them all together.

i've done more drawing than writing in my lifetime, but i still consider myself a writer. i learned poetry first, and art was a way to supplement it.
