Do you use book / movie references or parodies in your comic?

Hi!

I use some movie / book references in my comic ( https://tapastic.com/series/magicadvisor ). Like parodies on famous things. ^^ Like in this page where my villain is making up romantic stories about herself and my heroine. (Definitely not true lol!)

Do you use any references in you comic? For comedy or so? I love that kind of humor so it would be fun to see what you guys have done

YES! The character of Grace Letner in Lockmire Adventures is based on the main charcter of the sitcom Frasier a.k.a Frasier Crane. I made a gender-bent Frasier and all to also the other characters from the show but they're not in my comic. In Star Trek The Next Generation I loved the character of Deanna Troi so I wondered as I was really making the character on what would be funny while still it being close to me. That's when I had the very thought to have "Frasier Crane" in a sense on the Lockmire(a space ship).Also I wanted to keep this character as you know if you have seen the shows Cheers or Frasier that Frasier Crane is a "casanova" with the ladies.So I made it final that Dr.Grace Letner the counselor of the Lockmire would be a female "Frasier Crane" sorta while still very much in love with the ladies so I could still use it as a tool for good comedy when needed.

I have a show that the characters watch called "Teen Swamp Creature" which is basically a parody of all the vampire/werewolf teen drama shows!

Sort of? I have a character in my comic that is really into anime/manga so the beginning section of chapter 8 is sort of a shoujo manga.

Also, one of the upcoming chapters has a title that's a reference to an anime (because I am also an otaku).

A lot of modern references wouldn't make sense in my comic's world, but I couldn't resist this one

I once hid a couple of Harry Potter easter eggs in a panel.

For the most part I try to avoid topical humor that won't make any sense in a few years.

This is one of those references that no one will ever get except a few close friends, but there's a really really rEALLY bad Italian movie called Private House of the S.S. or S.S. Girls, just depending which is pretty much about sexy Nazis. For whatever reason? There's this emo Pope who shows up in a stupid outfit and weird eyeliner and starts shouting "You think I'm funny, huh?" over and over with a really bad dub. For a long time I'd joked that he looked like my character, and so I couldn't resist giving him the same lines. ... Too bad no one will ever get it, lol.

Mostly there's music references with this being a music comic. There's lots of little band logos sneaking around, and lots of posters.

Most of the references to movies i've made so far have been posters, although the building the girls live in is 237, which is the weird room in The Shining.

I've only referenced one book so far, Catch-22. I used its ISBN number for the serial number on my MC's dog tags. It's also partially why another girl has 22 on her shirt (the other reason being its numerology significance ;D).

I'll occasionally make indirect references, but I usually try to refrain from being trendy or heavy on pop culture.

So far not really in mine. I only mentioned certain series names where it applied to stories that actually happened to me, e.g. I have a Love Live plate. No quotes or scene references though.

With popular movies and with your (OP's) romance scenes it's certainly not a problem but I'm afraid references can be confusing if the reader doesn't know the source. I've read self-published works already that are basically only funny if you get all the references and find those funny. It seems like a pity to me when people rely solely on that to score with readers.

Nowadays I'm more into situational humor like in "Nichijou". If it clicks, it just works, independently from other franchises.

Oh yes... In the second chapter I used a lot of fairytales when my villain was making up different origin stories about herself XD
