I have this cute tapas side project that I want to do, but, for some reason, I can't make up my mind on the character positions in the comic.
Every time I draw the poses, I end up hating them immediately after and starting again, repeat, repeat, repeat!!
I originally wanted to do this by myself since it is a side project, but I'm starting to think of getting someone's help with this problem.
Does anyone have any tips or solutions to help me fix this problem?

Consider making thumbnails before starting on actual pages. Thumbnails are smaller, looser sketches of would be pages. You can draw them traditionally or digitally. They can all be on one page so that you can compare pages so they don't look too similar.

Thumbnails are your friends! But some general wisdom on the subject goes:

  • When the protagonist or PoV character is making progress, they move in the direction the comic reads (usually facing right and moving to the right in English).

  • Respect the 180 degree rule. If Jesse is standing on the left, and James is on the right, don't move the camera all the way around them so James is on the left and Jesse is on the right if you can help it. ie. The most the camera should move is a semicircle around them.

  • If you can find a way to reduce the number of people in a scene, do it. More characters always makes things harder.

  • Flat compositions look comedic, compositions with depth look dramatic. Choose what works accordingly.

  • Generally, start a scene with a wide shot that shows who is in the scene in relation to the environment and where they are. Try to avoid too many shots of just head and shoulders or head to mid-body without mixing things up.

  • Try to add in some interesting overlaps and nice diagonal angles if you can. Here are some examples I've sketched up to illustrate this in the past:
