Been looking for music to add into my work, does this public domain sight look legit?

It's probably not because that's not how the public domain works.

Basically, you own the copyright to your work as soon as you have physically made it, and it's yours until 70 years after you die. You can formally or informally wave your right to your intuectual property, but owning your IP is only as useful as you're willing to protect it anyways.

You might want to look into getting a creative Commons license instead, as they tend to be a bit more generally useful for us small time creator types. https://creativecommons.org

At first glance no, and despite the fact that my antivirus says it's okay I don't want to hang around on it.

I do know that a good amount of kevin macleod's music can be found on the incompetech website, if he's the one who's music you're looking for and it's all nicely organized by category.

I just looked at it for the first time. It looks a little amateurish (what, no search bar?), but I don't see anything suspicious. This dude is charging 15 bucks for the convenience of compiling his collection of digitally recorded public domain music which would otherwise be free. If you want to pay him 15 greenbacks, okay.

If it were a scam, I do not see how it would work. I suppose he could offer copyrighted music and pass it off as PD, but it wouldn't be worth the risk nor effort to him when he can get the genuine stuff for free just as easily.

The site does look legit to me. Don't take my word for it. Think of a few PD tunes and search his collection to see if they are on the list. Keep in mind that copyrights expire later in the U.S. than the rest of the world. Search for "In the Hall of the Mountain King" a classical composition and "A Podsafe Christmas Song" by Jonathon Coulton.
