I have a whole flashback worth of pages in my comic called "Mukhtar". I'm proud that it's finally done. It regrads the MC's adopted mother; Midha. Where she was once a Hashashin.

Starting from

Chapter 01- Page-30 Hashashins of Al-Harfi/Episode 92
till
Chapter 01- Page-70 A chance in life/Episode 132

So like, 40 pages longer.

She's trying to tell her past in order to convince her children to never become a hashashins.

Oooh, one of my stories is all about that. It’s not out yet and probably won’t be for a long time, but flashbacks are going to be very important for this story, even worldbuilding-wise. For example, there is a strong differentiation between memories and flashbacks. Memories are mostly harmless and can be intentional (like when you are trying to remember something), while flashbacks are more this kind of PTSD thing. In the world of this story, both are controlled by the deity of Past. If you look them into the eyes and they’re normal, you see a memory. If Past’s eyes are glowing, it’s a flashback. This concept is a core part of the story to the point where certain characters are afraid of remembering things and there is a superstition that you really shouldn’t remember things on purpose.
Sorry for the lore dump for a story that isn’t even out yet lol, but hey, you can look forward to it.

Oh, I don’t even have a title for it yet :sob: though I have two working titles that I’m considering. One is “Time favors the bold” and the other would be “Don’t kill the cat”. Both are based on a certain power the protagonist has.
Oh, and also “Silver lining” because the protagonist’s name is Argenta lol

Don’t worry, there will not be any cat killing (probably), it comes from the saying “curiosity killed the cat”

I enjoy doing flashbacks as a show-don't-tell type of storytelling. Have multiple in my last series.

Because I like starting my stories in media res, flashbacks are a usefull tool for me to fill in the blanks. Each book of Trespasser has at least 1 flashback sequence.

Hell, a major trait of the metaphysical element of the story is to organically weave in flashbacks and memories into the present day events.

The upcomming 3rd book is particularly heavy on the flashbacks.

Wild Nights, Hot and Crazy Days is literally a 187,414 word flashback. The whole thing. 1983 to 2001. Actually, 1981 if you count the prologue.

Defining Daecon contains a few flashbacks and is soon going to have another, dating back 4500+ years, but for the most part it's all in the present.

Lots of them. I tend to blur panels or desaturate colors when those are brought up...

Daunting to draw- crowds of people inside a fancy room :sob: I don’t know how to draw a fancy room and crowds of people will just take a while…

I actually challenged myself on this subject, cause my Santa Fae story open with a huge flashback, and every 5 chapters, the 1st is a flashback that informs on events or character as we see them, even thought they’re all many years apart. I’m usually a very linear person lol, but just wanted to try and found it a good technique to use in that way

oof, yeah, especially trying to come up with different designs for a crowd of people even though they don't have to be recognizable. folks might notice if they were all clones lol

For "Apparent Secrets," The prologue is a flashback that separates books one and two, and there are several brief flashbacks to provide backstory. Most are delivered by way of an event or item that triggers the flashback (a photograph, precious item, smell of coffee, etc.) :coffee_love:

For "Of Lowlifes, Lutes, & Liars," The most recent chapter has a flashback from the perspective of two weeks ago, from Aranthus's perspective. He's living in the Forbidden Ruins and discovers a strange, ominous presence lurking in his sanctuary after dark one night... :shook_01:

This was kind of a flashback mixed into a scene set in the present

I’m gonna be okay. I’m gonna be okay.

Where did that come from?

Oh.

I remember…

There haven’t always been only…

…These horrifying voices…

But others-

When Papi picked me up off the sidewalk after I’d tripped and skinned my knee and the blood flowed around the dirt and stones embedded in my leg - I thought nothing could ever hurt like-

You’ll be okay. You’ll be okay…

When Andrew sat beside me on the sidewalk, because I’d forgotten my key, the doors were locked, and Mom was who knows where. We had to wait for Tia Maria to bring us the spare key - let us inside, so we could go to sleep - and I cried - because I’d failed him-

We’re going to be okay…

Oh man a good chunk of my novel The Lost Forest will show the life of King Elzra and the creation of the guardians. If done correctly then a good flashback is one of my favorite things about reading.

For example in the manga Berserk the second arc is called the Golden Age Arc where we get to read the past of the main character and what influenced him to become the character that we see in act 1.

Any time we get to see the past of our characters, the history of the world then I am all for it.

We've got another "Damsel in the Red Dress" flashback coming soon! this chapter is from child Alicia's perspective!
