Dang, so many get recommendations here. Due to working on webcomics and school, I don't have much time to sit n watch movies anymore. I've been interested in Pan's Labyrinth and Her, since I've heard good things about them.
I guess some of my favorite films would be:
Aliens (Nice mix of action and horror)(Pretty gory),
The Thing 1982 (One of the best cliffhanger endings in all of cinema)(Very gory),
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (My characters are based somewhat on the great father-son dynamic in the film),
Return to Oz (Very creepy and scary for a kids film),
Beauty and the Beast (Favorite Disney animated film),
Coraline (The best/scariest chase scene ever),
Nosferatu (Still holds up after almost 90 years and the imagery will give you great ideas for your own comic, I promise you),
Back to the Future Trilogy (Been rewatching it recently due to the fact that it is 2015. Still no flying cars, though)
Return of the Living Dead (One of the best/scariest/funniest zombie flicks I've ever seen)(Gory and some full-on nudity).
That's what I got for movies. I'm not sure if they're on Netflix or not. I know I watched Thing, Nosferatu, and Return on Netflix but it's hard to say if they're still there.
I noticed some people mention tv shows, so I here are two series' I love to death:
Gravity Falls (Best Disney channel show in recent years and has great suspense, atmosphere, and mystery. It's currently in it's second season and had a huge reveal. If you haven't seen it, you should start from ep 1. It'll make the reveal even better.)
The Spectacular Spider-Man (The best adaptation of a Marvel property in my opinion. It's got great character development, fluent animation, and some the best choreographed fight scenes in an american action cartoon. Though you will hate the ending, trust me.)
Sadly these shows aren't available for streaming so you'd ether have to buy the DVD's/Blue-Ray's, purchase the seasons on iTunes, or find it for "free" on the internet (though that seems unfair to these talented people).
