Grim question for a spooky season: what do you want to happen to your creations when you'll die?

I've thought about it and come to the personal conclusion that the only right choice is to write in the will that everything I've ever created should be released into the public domain, and all assorted source files for that should be published openly on the Internet for free download.

I imagine, some poor stranger is going to accidentally stumble upon my files in a drive on sale at a thrift shop or something and uncover the stuff I deemed too weird to unleash into the world. Their soul may never be the same again

kinda flowing with what @fChangster said, to have people still hype or excited reading my stuff years in the future would be cool. maybe people making their own ocs for certain stories of mine? idk

plus i'm pretty sure that by defualt whatever copyrights i hold would go into public domian by then; my only hope would be the source material isn't altered to drastically

As a musician I´m on around 20 musical albums and 10 singles and I made some cover artwork, t-shirt designs, flyers etc as an illustrator. I´m planning to get printed comics out in the next years. When I die I hope that someone will listen to my music and read the comics. I´m putting out a sampler on vinyl with 16 different bands I played in.
I also plan to be burned and my ashes will be put into a vinyl record which will be printed 500 times and I will do the illustration for it. A company in England offers that service

I'll be dead. Does it really matter? lol It'd be cool if it was in print and kept being circulated. More likely the few people that read it (present and past tense) will have long forgotten it assuming I don't die suddenly. Unless a pretty incredible windfall happens and I become a professional with my hands in the pro scene, that's pretty much all of our fates with most things. Enjoy what you're doing and try to do it to the best of your ability so you don't have regrets. What more can you ask for?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that (but it should), and the rights to your stuff gets transferred to your relatives like as the material possessions.

I have left all "intellectual properties" in my will to a friend's son who is an actor/writer/musician etc. However, I have been specific as to titles, copyrights etc. listing all contracts and then leaving it open to "future creations."

Write hard, write true.

Copyrights are 70 years after your death. People have been known to go in and recopyright things (I believe Disney does that). If you haven't officially copyrighted (paid the government $$ for an official number) things could get sticky for your heirs if something of yours suddenly catches on.

Update: that 70 years is in the US. Sorry, sometimes I forget this is an international site. Best to check with the country you live in.

Throw that stuff in the public domain, I can't get any profit from it or care about what happens with my work anyway, so people should do with it what they want (as long as it would not be used by hategroups it's cool)

Seriously, my creations are solely for me and everything that's still in the works currently? Also for me. Just because I wanna share it with people doesn't necessarily mean I made it for other people to enjoy. I don't think I'm gonna get famous or that I'll be able to make a decent living off of what I make, but that's fine with me. The creation process is much more fulfilling than the actual end result.

So.. Yeah, idk. Give the rights away to family members, let it fade into obscurity, have someone continue it in my place, let it fall into public domain, it's whatevers.. If there's a cult following, I'll be pissed like lowkey lol "oh sure now it's popular, once I'm six feet in the grave, unable to continue making stuff.."

well I'm from the US it's just been a while since I looked at stuff related to copyrights but I definitely forgot about that 70 years bit. Disney is probably the most infamous that I know of (among other major companies) that have had copyright laws changed just to work to their benefit

I've thought a lot about this, and I think I'd want my family and/or friends to post the outlines of my unfinished stories for me, and ideally some of the unreleased scenes along with them. Finishing these stories is basically my life goal, so I'd feel pretty unfulfilled if no one got to read them.

Beyond that, I don't think I'd care much. If people wanted to continue them on their own, or just leave them as-is, it doesn't really matter. I just hope people would get some idea of the story I wanted to tell, haha.
