So I was approached today by a user on Tapas who says they represent ‘Bonzai Editions’ who is interested in publishing my comic on the website They plan to be launching. I haven’t returned the message but I was planning to ask what publishing house their affiliated with, but first I wanted to ask around here if anyone is familiar with them?

First of all, I’ve been approached by things like this for, tons Of people have because organizations like Tencent dreame and starry Like to bring in Creators with the ideal of contracts and getting paid and basically get all rights to their work.

The parts that didn’t really strike me as something like the businesses mentioned above is that it’s as far as I know translating my current comic to French which I would be fine with, and it’s asking about my comic and not my novel.

I have dreams of one day getting enough money getting an editor and publishing my novel but my comic is just a fun art project so it’s doesn’t bother me getting it locked into contract in the French version only.

My only issue is that I haven’t been able to search up ANY info on these guys, potentially due to it not being a published website yet.

Anyone got any ideas?

I've gotten messages from a couple of different organizations claiming to be the next up-and-coming website hosting site, but have heard approximately Jack and squat about them since. If they actually were the next up-and-coming website hosting site, there would be evidence of it somewhere.

I usually ignore those messages. Either it's A) a scam, or B) not worth my time to cross post my comic to a site with zero traffic.

I once had someone reach out to me claiming that he wanted to get into the business of printing/publishing comics, and all I had to do was send him all of my print-ready images for Hollow and he would publish it for me for free. Then he got offended when I told him I wasn't just going to hand over all my original high-res images to a total stranger on the internet with no proof of publication history just because he asked for it.

It's funny because normally I'm the exact same way! At least when it comes to my novel, but I'll never be able to publish the comic version because it's layout is strictly made for scrolling down on websites.

I don't plan on handing any media over but I'd at least like to see which publishing house their associated with to find out if their run by a scam. I appreciate the heads up and I definitely will NOT be sending files over, and I'll post whatever I find out here so other people can know!

I would take it with a grain of salt. I haven't gotten an offer from that house, but I've gotten those generic offer messages. Do your research. I was taught that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Honestly, I don't know if it's too good to be true! I'll post the message and then if you have some experience with some of the stuff that was said, that would be excellent!

I uploaded the message left on my profile since it’s relevant, But Hopefully I’ll be getting more info on It once I get some answers to questions like if there's a contract what does it look like, whose the publishing house your with, can I post on other sites, stuff like that.

Yup, that's the one I mentioned here:

Yah, I’m very suspicious, but I’m going to ask some questions and see, have you learned anything??

I have no experience with publishers and contracts so I'd rather not risk it. Sounds like unnecessary stress. I'll just keep ignoring these people until someone comes and proves it's worth it ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (which I think is very unlikely)

I got the same message, odds are its a scam because its a template that they change the names and titles for and send out on mass. If by some miracle they are a legitimate publishing house you will probably have to front the money for the printing or publishing so unless your work does really really well you will lose money. A good rule of thumb is if you can't find them on the first 3 pages of google or if the email address isn't professional, then its a scam.

I believe it’s strictly online only and as a rule I NEVER give money if someone is asking me to publish my work.

When in doubt, you can always ask for their creditials. What stories have they already contracted, who are involved, do they have any work in progress images of how the site is going to work?

I can't even find their publishing house while googling them, so they're probably not worth it. Too low on the totem pole to be noticed and could be more likely than not a scam to steal your comic.

Me! Me! I received the same message!
It is suspicious and I told them I wanted to ask them some questions first.

They say a lot of artist have joined already... and I really doubt it B/

I remembering another French site making an upcoming. And they had the author of Cat noir and Lady Bug to the roster.

Meaning, If you have "a lot" or if you have "that author" you will CLAME it hard.

What do Bonzai clame?

Honestly, I have no idea what they claim! I haven’t even gotten a reply message to the questions I’m asking so it’s not a great sign... So I’m guessing it is most likely not a genuine offer (or worse something like starry that can steal your Creative property) but I’ll still wait and see what they say, at least that way I can get a better understanding of them!

Same. Thus far, they mainly publish and sell risographie art but appear to be expanding into literature.

They have an Instagram with over 3500 followers @banzai.editions. They do appear on the 1st page of Google if you search the terms "editions Banzai" (it says "Acceuil ["Welcome"] - BANZAI Editions!"). The top 8 results features them.

Their website is here: https://www.banzai-editions.com/16 and their FaceBook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/Banzai.editions/7

Their website is in French but you can use a translate plug-in if you need another language.

One of their artists seems pretty popular, with over 25k followers on Instagram. They also have other artists with a fairly significant fan base and sell print publications on Amazon and their website.

ETA: Bonzai did not ask me for any money. But as a general rule, if you are approached by other publishers in the future, any publisher who asks you for payment is a fraud. Never, ever engage with a publisher who asks you for money. The publisher is responsible for absorbing any and all costs associated with your work (e.g. production, print, marketing/promo, translation, editing, etc.), this is the industry standard. And B.E. seem compliant with that.

If anyone receives emails from publishers asking for money, report them to Tapas Admin.

Have you asked for their draft contract to review? I did.

No, not yet. They haven’t exactly responded to my first message I sent back ^^’ I’ll give it Time though, and look it over when I get it. Thanks for all the help!

No prob. I used to work in contracts for a couple years (approval, amendments, rejections, etc.). Seemed OK, but make sure to do your own research. Depending on your genre, there are some writers organizations that will review your contracts and provide advice for free. For instance, the Horror Writers Association (horror is my genre).

Also: As a general rule NEVER grant exclusive rights to a publisher without a defined END DATE.

Bonzai says theirs is 1 year, which is fair. It is also subject to renewal on an annual basis (I find lots of smaller publishers ask for 6 months to 1 year, and avoid anyone who wants longer). Lots of writers, even very famous ones when they were just starting out, get swindled that way because it makes you lose all rights to your work permanently. It also makes it highly unlikely that you will receive royalties (but the publisher will still make money off your work!).

I actually got a response just last night that I hadn’t been able to see in the app.

This is verbatim the questions I asked since I said I would be sharing the process with this forum! For context they said they would try to answer my questions as best they could.

Excellent! I supposed my first question would be: what’s the process for changing the language from English to French, do I send the company the files or do I make the alterations? Would I get my own account to manage or would I be sending the company my files that they would then post to the site?

Online comics is actually my second job at the moment, so there can be periods of lag between posts. Is there any penalties if I don’t post weekly or worst case scenario, I’m unable to produce content in the future?

And I was wondering if you had a ‘draft contract’ that I could look over for myself? Thanks again ^^“

And thanks @wh_vigo for the advice about the draft contract! I really appreciate the information ^^
