I haven't been fortunate enough to see many types of non-exclusive contracts and was concerned about one I was recently offered by a startup webcomics platform. Was wondering if anyone else has come across this situation and what your thoughts are on this. This international webcomics site required a copy of my personal photo identification in addition to my basic personal details as proof I am the original creator of my series. Is this the norm? I understand the real name and address but given that this is a non exclusive with bare min to potentially no pay, imo, photo ID with DOB feels a bit excessive...
Um, that sounds sketchy as hell.
Jeez, they want your social security and bank account too while they're at it?
Lol, don't do it. They don't need anything more than your name and address to verify you're the owner. Date of birth isn't even present on federal copyright documents.
lol oddly, they just wanted my paypal for payment detailsty though for your reply
I signed with webtoon and a different webcomics site and neither of those required any ID. Try looking at a W-9 form as an example.
I would be careful. However, depending on the country the website is from, it can be required by law. That could be something to check.
I have experience signing up with non-exclusive contracts from different sites as well -- and none of them required an ID. If the concern is the date of birth, there should be a clause in the contract (usually at the end) wherein you certify that all of the information you provided is true and both signatures are original. If you are not of legal age, they won't sign with you as well (because it's a requirement that you must be of legal age to sign a contract) unless they provide a waiver/an authorization document to the parents or legal guardian allowing you to do so -- which is also highly unlikely because most publishing sites that involves money (especially if it has something to do with a split in revenues) usually requires you to be of legal age (18 years and above).
If it's a chinese company it's required by law, they can't do too much about it. Without an ID the contract won't be made effective there.
