I held a fanart contest for one of my comics to celebrate its completion and the applicant traced one of my comic panels …

I never had any of mine traced.

it has been, mainly the snk fanarts I used to draw
lol so I know it was traced just because the charas and not because my art per se

Most of the time I just ignore it, especially if it's a fan and they're just trying to make fanart (though I never held a contest where I ran into tracings)

The only time I had to address the issue was when someone was tracing over my art, changing the characters to be other peoples and then selling it as commissions (along with an ironic disclaimer to not steal his art or he will take legal action). When money or contests are involved it's an entirely different issue and I need to address it.

Yeah, a few times. Several years ago I did this piece of Avatar the Last Airbender fanart of Aang in his Avatar State with all the elements swirling around him like in the finale...

It got stupidly popular, and now I guess people just assume it's a legit piece of licensed art from the show, because people keep using it in memes and turning it into wallpapers and using it as their SoundCloud album covers. And there have definitely been people who traced it (usually badly) or recolored it (also badly) and tried to pass it off as their own.

honestly, nah. If they have, I never knew about it. But, most of my work goes under the radar so most people don't have me as an art inspo youknow. Maybe only a few things I've done have ever gone viral, and for those instances I have had to have some things taken down, but they just outright reposted art without credit, not the effort of tracing.

This has happened to me a few times too, actually! Not for a contest but like, I have received fanart quite a few times that was just my art 1 to 1. I never quite know how to feel, but I assume it's all out of love and I thank everyone anyways, aha.

Unfortunately some of my pug illustrations have been reproduced and put onto products. I’ve been able to get them removed if not based in China. It’s usually places like Redbubble.

I’ve even had to send a well known clothing brand (not sure if I can name names here) a cease and desist letter before.

My contest was also open to pieces of writing too, but I guess they were more confident in their tracing skills LOL
