Have you ever considering commissioning a 3d artist?

Something I was thinking about. 3d models for comics are pretty well excepted but it’s also excepted that it can be really hard to find good 3-D assets for some of the stuff you want to do. But what about commissioning a 3-D artist? If you could find a good 3-D artist couldn’t you, in theory, give them sketches of backgrounds and other things you wanted? Wouldn’t commissioning of 3-D artist be kind of similar to 2d commissions where you talk to the artist about what their going rate for certain things are (example; $20 for window panes $30 for a car model). Especially if it’s nothing too complicated like a fully rendered room or something. If you just wanted something low poly and simple that you could move around in Clip Studio Paint.

Has anyone here tried this? Are you a 2D illustrator who attempted getting a commission from a 3-D artist? Was it easy to combine your two skills? Do you think you got good use out of the assets you got? Or do you think it’s just better to buy general assets from a 3d asset store? Let me know below.

Well, speaking from experience of making stuff in 3D, it's more about the complexity than the size. So a car would be more complicated than creating a room because a car is very complicated. And a window--well it depends on the window.

If you only want a low poly model for things like referencing size--you can probably do that really well on your own with Blender or sketchup. Even having just a cube can help for size reference.

Yup! I commissioned these from a friend awhile back, and they've made it much easier for me to draw the various weaponry at whatever angle is needed for the panel. But one thing to be aware of when commissioning custom 3D stuff is that it's inevitably gonna be more expensive than anything you can buy on an asset store, since the non-custom stuff will be bought multiple times so the modeler can afford to charge less for it. Custom 3D backgrounds are tempting but I'm guessing they'd end up being very expensive given the amount of time and effort that would go into creating them.

Commissioning a 3d artist can get really expensive, I would recommend buying 3d models and playing around with them in sketchup. I had to use sketchup for an interior design class and it's pretty easy if you practice a bit with it.

Personally, I don't trace 3d models. But I won't get into that. If I was going the 3d route, I probably wouldn't commission a 3d artist. Here's why...

• I'm cheap, and also, I like to do everything myself.
• It feels too time-consuming.
• There are a lot of free programs, models, and apps already out there.
• It's also pretty easy to just take a photo of a room/prop yourself and trace over that.
• If I want to adjust the model, I wouldn't be able to do it myself.

So, if it's a one time thing, it might be okay to hire someone. But if you need a lot of models, I'd say watch a few YouTube videos and try to learn yourself. All the best!

I just taught myself how to use Maya and TinkerCAD and make all my custom 3D models myself. I still go to the SketchUp Warehouse for most things, but if I can't find what I'm looking for there (or even anything close enough that I can alter it when I draw it to make it into what I want), then I just make it myself. It's honestly not that hard to learn how to use a program like TinkerCAD, and even though it's built around manipulating basic shapes, you can do some pretty complex things with it once you figure out how to layer up your shapes and negative shapes.

If I weren't broke, maybe... Though for some elements, I'm trying to learn on my own, using the comic shortcut as a carrot on a stick : P I'm still going through tutorials but first priority is making recurring props that just take up sketching time.
