I'm almost starting to draw the comic I've been developing for a while, but I'm really stuck on it's title! I could really use some ideas, so I thought maybe you guys could help.

The main plot of the comic is:
Finn Hawkins is 18 years old when he gets abducted by aliens in the year 1989. At the ship, he gets genetically modified and tested on by the aliens, giving him the ability to shapeshift into an alien and have their magic abilities. Inbetween testing he gets cryofrozen, so he barely ages. When it's modern day on Earth, Finn manages to escape the alien ship and launches himself back to earth in an escape pod. When he tries to get into his parents' apartment, he discovers that it's now inhabited by a girl his age named Olive. He learns she has magic powers too, and she tells him there's a whole society of witches hidden from humanity, which she left to live in the real world. Olive helps Finn control his powers, but the aliens did not plan for Finn to escape and as he is the first test subject to have actually worked out, they want him back. (This last part is still a bit weak and I'll probably change it).

A bit of the lore behind it: The aliens have tested on multiple humans throughout history as humans are a very adaptable species and great to test on. Most of these experiments failed to create the "supersoldier serum" they wanted, so they dropped them back on earth after a while. However, these humans did get the magic powers and these got passed onto their offspring through DNA. That's how the witches originated. Their magic powers are weaker than the actual test subjects though, and they have more limitations.

Do you guys have any ideas on good titles for this? The entire comic has a very retro vibe to it, kinda inspired by Stranger Things. I'd like a title that makes people curious and maybe sounds a bit retro too, but that's not necessary ofc. Maybe some kind of pun would be cool too.

Also to clear this up, Olive and Finn won't become a couple. Finn gets a different love interest later.

Off the top of my head, maybe "Defectors" or "Defected" because he both ran away and they originally thought he was defective.

I think them wanting him back because he actually turned out to be more successful was not so weak.

If you're looking for constructive criticism, I'm a little put off by the witches being called witches when they've come from aliens if it's supposed to be an 80s vibe. What could be cool is if they mistakenly believe they are witches because they don't know the source of the power. It could be a point of conflict between the "witches" and this Finn guy because they don't want to believe him.

But it might be a matter of personal preference. I think genre mash ups can really work or tank so I'm kind of picky.

i like @GombikComics 's idea, the defected sounds good. defectors maybe sounds too much like a superhero squad

"star magic" could also be a cool one, or "gifted" - in a sense that these people have been 'gifted' their powers and you could get into the aliens motivations and how they perceive it vs how the humans perceive it (is it a gift? a curse? should they be grateful? do they owe the aliens?)

Thank you!

That's actually the idea I had too, as these abductions happened all over history. I think humans would definitely call it witchery and not eveb think about any alien origins. Maybe they erased the previous test subjects memories so they won't tell people it's actually alien and just let them believe it's witchery. I also thought it'd be cool to let it play into the history of witch hunting and everything, and that's why the witches are hiding from humanity now. Maybe in this world the witch hunts were a waay bigger historical event because there was more proof of magic. And in modern day it's all kinda calmed down because the witches are hiding now but maybe there are still witch hunters out there.

This was just a huge idea brainfart lol but critiques are appreciated! Thanks!

Oh and it would definitely be interesting for the witches not to believe Finn at first! Maybe Olive does believe him after a little while, and I've had this vague idea of them going to the witches hideout for something (Help? Maybe they need something from there? Idk). It'd be cool to have this conflict between the main characters and the other witches because Olive left them and now she's come back with this witch guy (maybe they think Finn's alien transformation is "shapeshifting"?) and a completely ridiculous story about them all having alien DNA.

I think explaining witches through history as aliens is a cool idea.

If you've been looking at the history, you might also be interested in this phenomenon researched by Paulides.2 There's a wealth of online material all over the place so his wiki page is probably the most coherent place to start.

This is the strange coincidences between 411 people going missing, inexplicably, in the public parks of the US. I'm not saying it's aliens but it's certainly interesting. Some of the stuff is really difficult to think up normal explanations for, especially the way victims are often found later with some of their clothing neatly removed.

I've never heard of that conspiracy, it's very interesting! I think 411 people is too much for the amount of people being abducted though, I was thinking somewhere below 50 people myself. I don't want the witch society to be that massive haha. Thank you though, I'll definitely look into it for inspiration!

I just thought of "Retrohybrid" but idk if it's a bit too.. meh? What are your thoughts?

Maybe something like "The Modified World", "The Experiment", "Through the Genes", "Behind the Genes", "History of the Outer-world", "What Changed from Before", etc.

The Alienated
GAIJIN
The Foreign Born
The Foreign Citizen
The Natural Born Alien
The Humanized Alien
The Unnatural Alien

Different concept! Really nice job
If you're struggling with some titles ideas, here's a few in a misc list:

  1. Hextraterrestrial (Get it? Because witches like to "hex" stuff and the main character is an alien test subject who encounters a witch….)

  2. Coming Home

  3. Whatever's Out There

  4. Alien Arcane

The list could use some work lol.

I love Hextraterrestrial! Only doubt I have about it is that it's very long and letter-y, would that be a problem you think?

Of course not, unless you want to shorten it to "Hextra" but then it would sorta lose the "outer space" vibe.
I like it too! I'm glad you found it intriguing. But whatever the outcome, if you could please at least credit me somewhere in a minor way that would be so appreciated. This is if you decide on the name, which you don't have to.

Of course! I'm not completely sure yet but if i use it, would a thank you in the first update's description be okay? If you have a comic I'll give it a shoutout too if you'd like!

That's more than okay! Again, thanks. And yes I do have a comic you could shoutout only if you decide on the name. :raised_hand:
