Help. Which is better?

Quick doodle for color test. Which do you prefer for comic? The cel shading or the watercolor one. Thanks

Personally I prefer the one on the left. It has a nostalgic appeal to me and appreciate the way you have the shading handled. I'm a little bit biased though. Watercolor kid of feels like home ^_^

The left is better cause it looks more stylized compared to the right which has the SLIGHTEST feel of being unfinished. So left 100%

I think both styles are good; it's clear that you know how to get the most out of either one. So I don't think which one people like 'better' is the most important thing to consider.

I would ask you:

1) Which one is easier for you to use (VERY, VERY IMPORTANT)
2) If relative ease isn't really a factor, which one best fits the mood of the comic? The watercolor style could really drive home the pathos of an emotional comic, while the cel-shading could be more effect-expressive for an action comic. Y'know?

Idk i’ve never timed myself so idk which the faster one, but i think the cell shading is easier because drop tool etc. But i’m happier drawing the first one. Maybe i need to let the watercolor go and go with the second for comic haha. Thanks a lot <3

You level of happiness when drawing is another big factor to consider though. I know it's not the same but I get a lot more done if I'm having fun with what I'm writing than if I'm trying to meet a deadline

Does the watercolor one strain your eyes more though? I mean for illustration it’s ok, but for comic idk if it’s a bit too contrast-ty you know?

I prefer the water color look. Especially with your line art style- I personally think that cel shading looks nicer with tighter or maybe even thicker lines than the thin, loose type that you have which match the water color look really nicely imo.

Re: how long it takes, how it matches the feel of the story, and what makes you happier to do are factors. If you like the water color style and it doesn't take much longer, then that's 2/3 and I would go for it, personally, unless it really clashes with the story somehow~

I actually find it easier to look at. I think its in the way everything's blended together.

Well this is just rough doodles, i usually sketch with very thin lines because i am used to manual watercolor but i can make it tidier and thicker. But you have good point, i mean every comic for me would be better in watercolor because i’m very biased. But the cel shading is faster, i think. Objectively idk which is better with fantasy genre though. Thanks a lot <3

Ahh I see i see. In that case I think it's hard to draw an accurate comparison/judgement if more factors than just the coloring would be different between the two would have to see 2 "final" versions next to each other.

That said! I'm also part of the "watercolor is super pretty" squad and wouldn't mind seeing more comics like that

Ahaha that’s right i should post the final one instead lmao. Yeah, also l have never made comics before so i don’t know in the long run which one will prevail(both in terms of motivation and effectiveness)

I like the one on the left for the simple reason that the character's face is what you see. The one on the right presents a big blob of color (a nice blob but a big one) that, to me, detracts from the character's face.

I didn't even notice the difference in the character's hair and facial shading because of the larger area of color.

All that said, it depends on what you want people to notice.

But my forte is novel writing, not comic work so you would know best.

Yeah, the cel shaded one is more sloppy, i guess, since i very rarely color with cel shading one too. I don’t even know what i want vs what works. I think i need to sleep on this first lmao. Thanks a lot though <3
