Let's start a holiday cookie recipe thread! Feel free to share some of your favorites as well!
I just finished mixing together a double batch of my Grandma's beloved holiday cookies and am sharing the recipe below! These are, legitimately, food of the gods (and transcend nostalgia, my friends). This recipe makes TONS of cookies (so only double the recipe if you're feeling saucy).
2 quick heads up about this recipe:
A) Prepare the cookie batter 8 HOURS before you plan on baking. You have to let the flavors mix in the fridge.
B) Sour that milk! Trust me, it's worth it (instructions on how below if you lake the sour milk).
Shirley's Sugar Cookies (as adopted by my grandmother (who is NOT Shirley)):
- 1 cup Crisco
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 cup sour milk (*to artificially sour it, add 2 tsp of vinegar to milk).
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 4 cups flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions:
- Cream together shortening and sugar.
- Add egg.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the dry ingredients.
- add the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk, to the shortening/sugar mixture. Mix well after each milk/dry ingredient addition.
- add the vanilla, mix, and REFRIGERATE OVER NIGHT.
Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
Then frost those bad boys and you are good to go!
I'll post photos after I bake them tonight/tomorrow. I might have to 3D print some special cookie cutters in the meantime (feel free to share your pictures/models if you have 3D printed cookie cutters of your OCs ... I might have to make a Monkey Bunny today...).
If anyone else wants to drop their favorites, have at it and drop them below!
