How can generic comics be so good?

I put off boku no hero for a while because it seemed like your typical generic shonen anime but one day I decided, what the hell let's check this anime out. For the most part, the anime was fairly generic, the characters seem black and white, you had heroes and you had villains. Hell, some of the characters were so 2 dimensional that they even went around calling themselves villains, I mean who even does that? The plot was fairly predictable, you have a protagonist that starts out weak and gradually gets stronger with every new challenge. For the most part everything was fairly straight forward, and yet I really liked the show. I don't know why but this show really hit me in the feels. Not many animes do that. I dunno if it's because I strongly identify with the underdog theme or if there is something else?

Hopefully, you guys can help me dissect this out, so I can apply it to my own comics.

Possibly the unique art style or the "simple" plot. New anime these days are changing up their style, but for the better.

For example, One Punch Man is extremely simple: You can't beat him. But I still love the show, even though he's a gag character.

It is but to me its more of a spin on it. Generic anime to me is one piece, fairy tail, Naruto and bleach. They all had the exact same thing but with there own twist to it.

Generic is not the same as bad and I think the word is used as a derogative towards things that people like but the person speaking doesn't.

Sometimes stories don't need to have a complex story or deep philosophical alegories to be good, sometimes they just need to be fun, and making something fun can be a little bit harder that it may seem.

Yessss this times a million! You can take the most generic plot and setting and still write a good story, as long as you have a good understanding of the genre you're writing for and what makes a story enjoyable to read and overall good. Just because a story is unique doesn't mean it's good, and just because a story is generic doesn't mean it's bad. The opposite is also true.

I think the writing and pacing are really helping it out. Most anime like these tend to be slowed down by filler episodes, but to my surprise, every episode moves the plot along, be it I've only watched season 1.
