AWESOME TITLE DROP!!!
For Peppermint Helmet,2 I wanted to do a random gag strip so I felt the title should be random as well. I went to a two-word random generator and it spit out Peppermint Helmet. A comic was born.
For Soul Ascendance my friend actually came up with the name x,D and I came up with the name for his story so I guess him and I are even. When it comes to our own stories we tend to have trouble but have no trouble giving titles for each other.
Soul Ascendance makes sense for a title because the story is about the characters who are deceased and currently living in the afterlife in Purgatory and to eventually get their redemption they basically become hitmen to kill off demons that have invaded the realm of the living.
All right! This is an exciting thread. My current comic is called Spidersilk3 for a few reasons. There was a working title before this, but another comic of the same exact name launched in that same week; we had no previous knowledge of each other! My reasons for that name were loose and frankly quite stupid, so I let it go after a few months and did some mind mapping. I came up with Spidersilk and the comic took off.
Reasons. Take the word apart and you get spider silk. The main characters are thieves, and the thieving system is separated into two branches: spiders and serpents. The characters I speak of are in a spider cell called Orbweavers and, well, surprise, their cover is as weavers. So, there's the silk!
Take the word apart after the second s and you get spiders ilk, as in spiders and their sort (which would include the serpent cells and all other characters affiliated with the main cast).
Spider silk is extremely strong; I like to think about that in regards to the characters and their ties to each other. And like spider webs, their connections range from simple to complicated, chaotic, beautiful, etc. I am really into characters and how they relate to each other and wanted the name to reflect that.
Also I just love spiders.
Grassblades took a LONG time getting a name. I had individual chapter-names, or even names for imagined volumes of it, but I could not seem to think of a single, over-arching name for the entire story. I bashed my head against that wall a LOT before it finally crumbled.
I knew I wanted something general enough to cover a wide range of events. I knew I wanted something that was reminiscent of the various East Asian cultures/storytelling traditions that inspired it. I knew I wanted something that somewhat described the main character(s). But what?
I hit upon the idea of using nature-imagery because it's such a common theme in haiku-poetry - and I like the sparseness of haiku. I then remembered that a.) Lian Hearn has written a novel called Grass for His Pillow and isn't that just the prettiest name ever? b.) one of the books about Matsuo Basho, the great haiku-poet, is called Grass Sandals. c.) this is somewhat tenuously related, but in Swedish, children who grow up in tough circumstances are sometimes referred to as "maskrosbarn" ("dandelion children") - and that fits one of my main characters to a t.
The nature imagery was all there - now it was just a matter of finding some variant that fit. And after going through and discarding DOZENS of them, I finally hit on Grassblades. It's short, it's nature-themed, and it's sort of got a double meaning - there's the grass, obviously, but you can also read "grassblades" as referring to actual blades. I.e: swords. And one of my main characters is a swordsman. It's supposed to imply a lot of things - the humbleness of the character's circumstances, a rootlessness and wandering life, etc., etc. and IMHO, it works.
... this is probably WAY too much thought to be put into a webcomic title, but er. This is how my brain is wired, and titles are important.
Mine is 6,753 which sounds like it doesn't make any sense at all but it's a hidden, really big spoiler. I was in my giggling-evil mood when creating it, haha CX as it's quite long to read I myself call it 'sisefi' or 'szesiepa' (from first letters of numbers in english and polish)
I came up with World of DIK1 in a moody time of my life. Now some 5 years ago. Things weren't working the way i wanted. I had a lot of frustration in me and very synical about the world. I did a small funny comic called MIK and actually didn't want to create another figure. I just wanted to draw and express these random comics ideas, just to get them out of my head. So i created the alter ego of MIK called; DIK. Hence the world of DIK was born.
I love naming things. Especially my stories and characters
I think Dreamcatchers2 is an enough obvious title. My main characters does the work instead of a broken dreamcatcher.
While Furusato House1 actually came from a song named Furusato. It became the Lord of the House's family name. And later I realized furusato(故郷) means home/hometown, so it just turned out to be the perfect title for my comic
Actually, The Penventor was referred from the word "inventor." The word "pen--" was a loooong story...
Naming my comic after the main character, Daniel3, just seemed logical in the end since the story is all about him and his 'vampire issues'. I like the title, but the only issue I have with it is it's such a common name that it's harder to get the comic noticed in say, search engines and the like.
It wasn't the first title I thought of, but I can't remember what my first ideas were...I just know they were really dumb. XP
Extra fact - I thought about spelling Daniel's name in a more odd way, like 'Danyl' or something, but not only did I decide it'd be better for his name to come across very common, I also didn't want people to pronounce it wrong or think I didn't know how to spell. XP
I struggled to find a name for my comic which is an autobio piece about my my fall through homelessness and addiction and how I stood up again. I tried to think of something other than homeless, drugs, addict etc. Then I thought about the beach where I grew up surfing and where I was homeless, and the specific location where lifegaurd tower25 is, and deicded to name it after my favorite spot that I would go to to surf, hide, cry, or whatever. So there you have it Tower25 is the name. you can check out my comic here at Tower251
Naming can be a very difficult thing for me. I always want something clever but sometimes by trying to be clever it turns out cliche. I don't know how that happens but there it is. My original working title was pretty lazy, the Wilderness Comic. I tried to think of an angle to describe the substance of the story but I began to run into my usual problems. I really wanted to capture the core feelings of overcoming intense struggles, physically and emotionally. After bumming around Thesaurus.com and checking to see what names have already been taken by other comics, I finally found one that felt right. Visceral6.
Naming was SUPER differcult for Silversong1.
I know what the plot was, what it was about and who it centered around but picking a name was super hard. so .... I narrowed it down to a little teeny little aspect. One thing in the entire vastness of the story, a small thing that connected the dots. Something that been present since page 3 and no-one has mentioned as such but will be drawn attention to more and more as the plot evolves.
I'm crap at giving names to comics. Malleus Maleficarum1 had its name changed like 6 times or something, mainly because I adjusted the story and the focus kept shifting around. Once the concept of the story became more prominent, it was obvious to choose some sort of witchy name to fit the witch-hunt themes of the story. I ended up using the name of an already existing 1400s book entitled "Malleus Maleficarum" because I am SO original :'D
"Malleus Maleficarum" is Latin for "The Hammer of the Witches" - a book about identifying and convicting witches, which I thought was quite befitting to the story. Problem is it's probably hard to pronounce for some...
Stormspectrum3 is de name of my maincharacter, who is named that way because of the colorspectrum in his eyes. The colors are constantly moving, one of the other characters comments that the colors move like a storm.
I had many different work titles before I ended up with Devil's Acres2. And even after I decided on it I was not sure if it would be the final name or not.
There are some streets in Germany that are called "Teufelsäcker", which translates into Devil's Acres. It was one of those moments where I heard the word, stopped, and started thinking about it's actual meaning. I found it to be a very odd name for any place really, and it made me wonder what must have happened there to receive such a meaningful name.
That made me realize how well it fit to my comic, that is about a serial killer.
(And it has another connection to the story as well, that I can not spoil however).
