How did you decide on a genre for your comic?

Honestly? I just write what ever type of story I want to. I never think "I want to do sci-fi or fantasy". I think I have a story idea that I'm excited about and run with it.

For both SubSUB and In Between Cafe, I chose slice-of-life. Most stories came straight from real-life, combined with bit of humour. Besides, SubSUB was my first serialized comic series, so I wanted to start off with a simpler genre. As for my new comic In Between Cafe, I was inspired by my uncle, who runs his own cafe. I loved his cafe's atmosphere. Inspirations can come from anywhere, really.

I chose neo-noir / action-drama because that's where my personal tastes reside. I was always a big fan of heist movies, H-K action cinema and comics that weren't of the typical superhero mold. My comics follow more of the classic revenge tropes so prevalent in those types of films.

You don't see a lot of webcomics using that theme, since they're mostly gag-a-day or dealing with friendlier content.

I'm a big geek for anthropology and human evolution. I love the fact that there was a time when humans weren't the only intelligent species on the planet. We were all fighting to be at the top of the food chain. Couple that with the fact there isn't a ton that we know about prehistory. It leaves a lot of room for cool SciFi/fantasy stories.

I chose slice of life because I can't draw. And a bit like @Manakenny, I thought it would be easier for me to be able to express myself. If I knew how to draw, I'd probably do heroic fantasy/steampunk comics.

I chose Slice of Life because, well, my friend came up with the story and she asked me to draw it before she ended up six feet under. (Somehow, saying the 'd' word in a forum upsets a lot of people). It felt like a tribute, in a sense.

My choice for my comic (the only one still NOT currently in development) was a fairly easy one to make.

SlackerJAW Comics is basically as well, basic as you can get. As a slice of life comic/gag comic I didn't really have any ideas or stories in mind so I thought I'd make fun of the first thing that came to mind. And wouldn't ya know it, there's plenty of myself to make fun of! That's really it. Just taking experiences Ive had first hand or know all too well and laughin about it. P;us it's a fun way to draw my friends and make them laugh too.. well, once they actually appear in the comic eh.. >.>;

I naturally ended up at Slice of Life because those were the stories I wanted to tell. My current project Monstrous is autobio, but my next project isn't going to be.

For Hexenringe I started with two characters that I wanted my artist to draw and an idea with a twist that ended up not using (though I may in the future) which led to the where we are now. The world lends itself to all genres. We've already seen tokusatsu heroes, kaiju, assassins, and comic characters come to life. Expect to see witches, robots, pirates, and killer squirrels in the future. (I may or may not be kidding).

My love for the sci-fi and comics of my youth heavily influenced my decision to make Suzi Quazar:Spacegirl Adventures!.I just wanted to tell a story that I thought was fun.

I chose slice-of-life because I enjoy those kinds of stories. For my first real comic, I thought it was appropriate and the easiest to draw. My current comic now is for practice, after all. The real stories I want to tell involve a little bit more time and development and right now it's just me throwing ideas at the wall. But in the future, I have plans for two separate stories: a mystery/paranormal one and a fantasy/adventure.

I chose detective mystery for the webcomic I'm working on (Outside the Box, coming soon, tell your friends) because I love the genre, the challenge of working in interesting character development while all this complex mystery stuff is going on! And I had an idea for this OC (my main character) and I was like dang I could really go far with this concept.

But also I really hate Steven Moffat's writing tropes in Doctor Who and Sherlock and I wanted to do everything different to him

I usually go for adventure/romance stories. Ofcourse, I always hate putting a comic into a category because it limits the readers expectations and sometimes what the creator could possibly do within the confines of the genera if they're trying to follow it. I can probably say lots of comics have a bit of every genera in them no?

Well your questions really i dont get it, i think a lot of stories, a lot, some born from a character Design others, a message i want to give in a story, others are insipired by others stories, some of them born because i want to draw something and i build a story from that object or scene, my actual comic DAEMON was born from two character designs and scene i wanted to do with them(and i think of all the stories i have in my mind, is the less interisnting, but the one i am most fond of it)
Most of my stories start to build themselves and some of them are funny, others are serious but....i never decide a genre usually, i think an story without thinking in a specific genre, i....just dont get it how to choose first the genre and then do the story!! XD it so weird for me!!

I usually write and draw in the "slice of life" genre, however with a bit of fantasy or sci-fi thrown in. Slice of life is to bring the readers close to home, a normality. But then with one, small detail that is different, which changes everything. A "what if" scenario. Like, what if everything was the same to our world, except one thing that was different? The genre then shifts depending on what that one thing different is. Alter the perspective a little. Is it horror? Sci-fi? Fantasy? Adventure? What if?

<.< hm... I never had a genera in mind. I never dictate a comic by a genera, rather, once the story's complete I got back and look at it and say "Hmmm.... this seems like a fantasy romance kind of comic..."
Though, most of my comics do end up being fantasy adventure romances, some comics emphasize one category over another. (Hacheeachkee emphasizes more adventure, Death Prince emphasizes more romance)

I mostly write gag/shorter-story comics because it's what I'm best at, shorter stories, often with a joke at the end. I also enjoy slice-of-life.

Though, I'm planning a longer story-based comic later on... I think I'd call it an adventure/action comic (characters in a game world, exploring this world and there's probably gonna a bunch of fights with boss characters ect.) with a bunch of comedy mixed it (as the world is a parody of/homage to mainly 3D platformers and similar games, with a lot of jokes based on "game logic"). So: adventure, action, parody? For me it's less about choosing a certain genre and more about making a story/joke and then finding out what genre this story fits best into

I chose action and a sort of cyberpunk genre because those are two things that really capture me as an artist. I really love martial arts comics but I'm also a sucker for anything futuristic and supernatural. Some of the best advice I've ever heard was think of the type of comic you would like to read and make that, that was pretty much how I came to choose my genre.

I usually choose Fantasy themes because they are sometimes easier fro me to draw and plan, plus I can be FAR more creative with them then most other genres. Well, sometimes.

Most, if not all, of my comics will be either partially or fully fantasy/myth-based.

My current series (Change in Fate; Above) is actually based off of a character I made for roleplaying, in which I made into a 'race' as a whole. And Magic Hunt was actually the opposite, Pruina being featured in the comic before being used in role playing.
