How different are you from your main character?

hey friendos I'm bored and running a 102-degree fever and nothing is helping not even Vicks so I guess I'll just weather this one out because the hospital is expensive af but I guess this is what I get for running under the wet season rain to get some milk. Anyways I'm bored since I have nothing to do and wanted to make a thread to get to know you and your creation better so I guess I'll start.

My main character right now is Valentina and she's literally the opposite of me meaning she's sporadic, changes mood rather quickly, stubborn, doesn't give up on someone even if it's clear they gave up on her, enthusiastic, optimistic, and overall just very extroverted but me on the other hand, I'm set on my mood. Like, if I'm mad, I stay mad for the rest of that day and sometimes the next day too. I'm still sort of stubborn unless it comes to dealing with people because if you don't like me I won't pressure you I'll probably just avoid you at all costs. I'm not enthusiastic and I can be very pessimistic at times and I'm also a huge introvert, something not common in most of Latin America.

So, how are you guys and your main characters different? I'd like to hear.

I've noticed more and more how similar I am to my main character while writing him lmao. We have the same political values and social incompetence... But then again my main is a genius... And I'm not. But I've had to learn so much bull writing him because I need to make him believable, and not just state that he's smart. I am noticing he's pretty effeminate as well, and I always think about if it makes sense since I'm a woman writing him.

I've found you often end up assigning at least one of your traits to your characters without meaning to. I hate reading and he's the biggest bookworm ever, but he's also up all night drinking coffee just like me. And I'm pretty sure if I lived in a time without computers I would be reading books instead. I also relate to my characters struggle of being a shorty, even if he's way shorter than me.

My therapist once said that we like what we think that belongs to us.
I have a character named Bonnie, who's kind a bitchy personality and habits, she's flirty as hell, provocative, outgoing and smooth with everyone and everything and likes to wear flashy clothes or clothes that don't cover too much
....while i'm an A class introvert with social anxiety who's totally incapable of flirting, too shy to even wear shorts or skirts sometimes, but hey, she's like my beloved child! So i do think that even characters that look totally the opposite from us, actually may rappresent a part of our souls, maybe how we'd like to be!

This was just an example, but i really have a thing for aggressive/flirty/sexy characters lol, most of mine are like this and i love them!
It's very weird but who knows...maybe they are truly linked to us ^^

I'm actually pretty tall (5'11") so I guess I can somewhat relate to that considering Valentina is 6'2"? Idk also the fact we're both Hispanic, so I guess we have at least something in common. BTW your oc sounds very interesting!

ahaha, quite similar my MC is an OC that I made back in highschool that's a cartoon version of myself, so he's loosely a self insert lol. At the very least we look a little similar. That said, I was super careful while writing this to let him be his own character, especially considering his world and influences are quite different from ours. Thus he starts out with problems that I've never personally experienced, and resolves them in, I think, a fairly interesting way!

A few of the other main cast are like this too, some characters based on a few of my friends xD truthfully I went this route since I knew this was just going to be a short-ish one-shot and wanted to skip through the character design phase and get right into the writing haha. I of course designed some new characters for this project, I think there's like... 11 unique chars in the story and only 4 of them are like this. Kind of lazy of me, but I hope everyone enjoys the characters anyways ^^

ooh that sounds interesting! But it's funny someone brought up self inserts because back when Valentina was a fandom oc she had my name and everyone thought she was a self insert and I just went with it but in reality we didn't look alike, act alike, or even talk alike! I just really sucked at names

The obvious is that im not a teenage girl, being an old man. Shes also an optimist with disregard to authority. Shes got a friendly outward appearance unlike myself where i look moody or "pissed" off. She isnt all that goal oriented, while i generally have plans. I wanted a character as far away from me as possible as i have another series where the main character is more relateable to myself.

In very many ways and not just because they're both men and I'm a woman. Because they are Jekyll and Hyde (literally), I consider myself as the middle ground between the both of them as I am not an extreme in either direction.

i wont deny that my two main characters in twaw sprang from a self insert of mine and a self insert of a friends - so theres definitely similarities between me and the pair of them. mainly daddy issues.

My main character and I are alike, because I created him to live a life in a story that wish I could live. The main difference between my main character and myself is that I'm not immortal and he kind of is as long as he isn't defeated completely.

In some ways, vastly different. I mean, all I do is eat and sleep and write and draw and play games (when I'm not slaving away on homework). On weekends I don't even hear the sound of my own voice unless someone calls me on the phone or I sing to myself. Not exactly a life that one would want to read about... ^^'

In some ways, though, we're a lot alike. I've noticed a trend in the main characters I create: a lot of them are really independent. They don't need others to be happy; they don't live or die by societal approval.
And not in a dark way where they stubbornly refuse to rely on anyone but themselves, but in a sort of freeing way where their motivations come from within, and any friends they make along the way are more of an added bonus, rather than pillars to wrap their lives around.

It's like...when I write a story, I just put my own perspective on life into a more exciting context. ^^

I think both of my main characters make up different aspects of my personality. Alex is more of my quiet and introverted side while Sophie is the part of me that doesn’t take things to seriously and is easily excited by small things. They both have character traits that are different than mine though, Alex is very austere and Sophie is extroverted. So I guess about half of their personalities are derived from me.

He's kind of a broken person who tried to be strong and it ends up on him making mistakes.

To list the differences, there are a whole lot. At least I know my limit, and won't attack people based on suspicion.

Hmmm one of my main characters (the one in my profile pic) is based on my brother, he is pretty naive , loses temper fast when someone make fun of him, and he also follows people orders. Can't say something like "no, I won't do that" .

While the other main character is based on me + my father, the funny part is me, and the polite is my father's. I got the feeling that everyone in my story have serious personality, while he's the only one who plays dumb lmao

Himuri acts before he thinks, talks a lot and is stubborn, and far from being shy. We both try to think positive, are clumsy and hate waking up early, but that's it I think.

Sakari would have more in common with me since he's quiet and enjoys drawing. Though he's too hard on himself when he messes something up.

An finally, Kiyomi. An angry ball of sass. Nothing like me. xD

Mmmm at the core, I have the same problem as my MC, which is that we both tend to get really obsessed with certain things and get extremely discouraged when our work doesn't get enough attention (which is pretty common among artists). But personality wise not really, Frances is pretty brash - she isn't a bad person but is really socially immature and insensitive, which gets in the way of making friends. She's also pretty overconfident when she talks to other people as a result of her * growing insecurities *.

I'm pretty much the exact opposite - I'm an introvert and overly sensitive - I'm shy but don't really have much trouble getting along with others. But I also tend to be kind of arrogant when it comes to comics around my friends and can blab on for hours despite being an amateur storyteller same with my MC and jazz.
