How do you like your romances in your stories?

You're free to write your story the way you want. Romance isn't a bad thing so as long as it's not toxic and badly written I think you'll be fine even if it's early on in the series.

I'm not a romance person myself so as long as it's not the main focus I'll be happy to check your story out for you.

I also prefer when romance focuses mostly on a couple being together than they trying to get together (but not being able to because them getting together is meant to be a grand finale), I mean... my main comic is at this point over 200 pages of this xDD and we've another one, I'm drawing 22nd chapter of story with multiple couples that either get together in their introductory chapters or have been together beforehand xD

But, the most important thing, you should write what you enjoy writing, because if you try forcing yourself to write something you don't care about or even worse, dislike, I think it will be obvious and so less enjoyable to the audience.

It really depends on what I'm feeling that day. Sometimes I like a good will they, won't they. I just like the fun of figuring out who gets to be with whom and what will lead to those endgame coupling. I've read a lot of things like this before, both where the main love interest was obvious from the get-go and one where there are a lot of twists and turns. It really is more of a "here for the journey" kind of thing for me.

But sometimes, I just don't feel like I'm in the mood for that sort of thing. Like others, it's also fun for me to read stories where the couple gets together really early, and it's just a series about them navigating their relationship or whatever else is out there.

Maybe it's just because I like romance in general, so however way you spin it, if I'm in the mood for it, I'll likely read it!

I think I'm down for relationships between two characters with completely different backgrounds. But honestly, it depends what I'm feeling like @Bulalakaw said.

Nancy and D is just my observations from High School on dating at a very young age for example. I don't like writing that type of stuff, but I did it anyway because I figured I can make a couple of points lol.

Although when writing the two, I think I realized I like writing dysfunctional weirdos together. :v

I like when romance is realistic, and you get to see their happy life together after they start dating, marry, etc.

By "realistic" I mean something like a normal woman dates a normal man, instead of a CEO billionaire that works part time as a supermodel, kpop singer, kdrama actor, and is taller than the tallest NBA athlete.

Did I mention that the CEO is also a werewolf pack leader for some reason? Yeah...

Give me something nice, cute, and realistic please!

Reading romance novels. and watching romcoms gets so tiresome as a man, it's alienating.

No wonder most romance readers are women, even tho some men like romance too, at least I do.

BTW I know that romance novels are catered to women just like action flicks are catered to men (male gaze) so it's okay, no need to change the genre.
But I'd love a subgenre called "realistic romance" to go along with other romance novel subgenres like "regency" "contemporary" "paranormal" etc.

TLDR; Please tone down the perfect men (and women) and give me something relatable. neither have to be flawless human beings, they just have to love each other very much, y'know, like in real life.

If I have to make a romance out of the two characters in my comic, I would make it funny, awkward, and crazy. It doesn't just have to be realistic, it had to be wild!

Idk, does just having a couple in your story count as having romance? I do like couples in my stories, whether starting out as such or becoming such early on. Idk, it just feel weird to me when everyone's single (doubly so when at the same time, no-one's aro) :'D

Let's not fall down the rabbit hole of "omg don't write unhealthy relationships, it should all be Disney perfect" nonsense.

I don't know where the ridiculousness against realistic people with realistic flaws and problems came from but god... it's very frustratingly popular.

I do love it when the characters are in an established (or at least obvious) relationship for a considerable part of the plot. The crushing and pining and getting together parts are cute and emotional when done well, but characters who are already past that and are just bouncing off of each other with consistent relationship shown are just great, I think.

ESPECIALLY if the author does not pull a 'well now that they are together it's boring, so it's time to bring in some jealousy and potential love triangles and a bunch of misunderstandings playing on their insecurities'. I mean, sure, those plots have their place, but I just adore stories where it's like. They are together. They are in love. They shall take on the main adventure together now. Wholesome. If they are a battle duo on top of that? Delishious.

But I also love my fair share of rivals to lovers, or the 'actively making each other worse' gremlin couples, etc. etc.

As far as my own story goes, I have one couple already established in the main cast (while planning to explore their get-together story in a plot-related flashback), some of the main cast also have relationships with background characters, and some will meet their love, for better or for worse, as the plot goes forward, so there's plenty for everyone.

I'm also excited to write a queerplatonic bond that is set to bloom between certain two aroace characters. Maybe with a dash of demi-romance, but there's a long way till that anyway. In any case, that's a subplot pretty equivalent to a romance that's hard to find anywhere (canonically recognized as such I mean), it feels good to add it to the mix too.

Exactly from my experience I learned from what not to do dating or writing romance wise. It can teach you how to look out for reg flags. If written correctly and it knows what it’s doing like they said.

I like when romance is a little messy. I don't like when everything needs to be squeaky clean and idealized.

I know Bros isn't a film without flaws, but I did like how it got into some of the more weird, awkward, and at sometimes even gross aspects of dating. And some people were critical of that because they want the fairytale/Hallmark romance film.

That is sort of why in my romance story plots are sort of "complicated".

My next story is going to have a romance subplot, which is kind of scary being that it'll be my first in a published story.. So I don't really have a lot of experience writing it. Oh well. You only know if you try.
