How important is speed in your work?

I’ve realized that when you’re in the thick of creating a big project, you don’t always have time to be nervous or worried because all of your time needs to be invested in actually finishing something. That made me wonder if speed, or at least a well made schedule, can help you through more taxing projects.

Do you value speed and output in your work, or are you more interested in taking your time?

Now, you SHOULD take your time. Of course. But when you have to deal with the reality of deadlines you'll come to value speed. I prioritize speed with my stuff. Unfortunately it also means I forget to take my time when I get the chances to.

TL;DR It's good to have a balance, and quality is of course important but don't be afraid to just work and not worry about perfection.

I still experiment from time time when I'm not given any projects to work on so I take my time analyzing and trying new things.
When I'm doing a project that has a deadline like say, a week. Then Yeah, speed. Love speed.
When I'm satisfied with a current style I have I usually create lots of drawings and upload them daily. But right now I'm still trying out new techniques.
I value speed, I like to create more quality drawings than sitting down finishing one large project. Big projects are daunting for me.

Speed is important, but quality is a greater asset than speed. I dont want to sacrifice my vision for "getting it done quick"- so I take a little longer if it means I can love the project when finished.

Dragging that slider all the way to left into the "of dire urgency" field. It's virtually priority one but mainly because I'm starting to get dayjob interference that's bleeding into my projects. I agree with your idea that not having time to be nervous/worried means that you're even more focused on finishing things, on getting to the next step.

From writing to drafting to thumbing and art, speed is a gain that can be both blessing and tragedy. Quickly writing and editing scripts can make for organic dialogue/transitions but often leaves pacing and direction cues in a hazard. This ends up bogging down the art phase a lot 'cause I end up spending way too much time trying to fix clunky scenarios by cutting pages or re-scripting halfway through. It's a mess sometimes.

So speed's a massive influence on the quality and quantity of work output for me in regards to comics. I'm more interested on taking time with stand alone illustrations -- learning new art techniques there for use in comics later proves a lot of fun!

I will always advocate that if you want your best stuff to come forth, take your time and actually WANT to create it.

I also self-destructively demand a lot out of myself from only an hour of work.

Speed is important, but at the same time I feel like you need to take your time with your projects, but no too long.
It's nice when you get to make some quality content, but like for example, if in a comic, you post a page (with, lets say 5 panels) per month, it would be too slow to me, and the beautiful drawings would not help at that point. Tho it depends on comic ofc. some of them do work with slow speed too

I value speed a lot (though you wouldn’t know it from how long I’m taking to update my comic lately). Rather than rushing things, I look for ways to make my process more efficient. I set up some actions in Photoshop so that after I scan a page in, I just press a button to get it set up with all the right layers and switch to my inking brush. I also have actions for filling in flats - I select the relevant areas, choose a colour, and then hit a button and it expands the selection a couple of pixels and fills on the right layer for me. Small things, but the amount of time they save adds up. I also look for simpler and faster ways to emulate particular textures when I’m shading.

I'm probably the slowest human in existence. I take my time with everything. I'm late to every single thing, even if I created the time for it. I have absolutely no sense of urgency. I'll get a bit annoyed if I'm running late, but usually that plays off with me disregarding the lateness, and still taking my time. xD

That being said, I'll be really upset soon! I created a deadline for my novel! I probably won't make it, even though I'll be out of a job soon and will have the time to do so. But I'm just glad it's actually keeping me motivated. Even with the deadline, though, I'm still taking my time with it.
I do a lot of world building on the side of my novel work, and my novel wouldn't have a lot of the aspects it does without that world-building. I've found that if there's something I don't know about my world, it'll spring up while I'm creating something else, and I just have this gut feeling that it's correct and those things were meant to be connected, and that that's the reason why I didn't know it earlier.

I take my time on my work. And on everything. Except driving. I like wind, so I zip around. But I don't cut people off, so if I get to traffic I stop. Luckily I'm a night owl and no one is on the roads when I have psychotic breakdowns and need wind-rush. xD

Prioritize speed if it's efficient, but if you can;t make art/pages efficiently because you're producing too quickly, then slow down. It's quality not quantity; so many creators have had stories that declined as a result of just wanting them produced on time instead of up to their own standards,

Speed is super important if you want a consistent schedule. Otherwise you might find it hard to maintain your buffer. But obviously you shouldn't sacrifice detail too much.
Your work should be efficient but still competent - so long as you are drawing accurately and presenting everything neatly there's no reason not to work fast. Make sure your work is good enough for you.

More than speed what is important is organization (something I lack, I'm more the kind of person who leaves everything for the last minute). You should be aware of your own skills, available time, desired results, then set reasonable goals and try to be consistent with them.
I think taking some time it's good in order to keep the comic within the desired standards but at the same time some kind of goal should be defined to avoid spending much more time than necessary in a single page.

I'd say I haven't valued speed enough, because I just don't get a lot of things done. Pushing through to finish something is what I'm working on now!

When it comes to working on a deadline (especially in a professional setting), I've learned that speed is a necessity and quality of work is a given.

Valuing speed doesn't have to mean sacrificing the quality of your work, it's about completing your work while still maintaining the quality. The trick if to train your brain and hand(s) to process your work quickly while still keeping the original vision, and a lot of that has to deal with confidence.

To anyone struggling with quality vs quantity, I say don't be so meticulous/anal about your hand strokes— make confident ones and commit to them — and especially don't stick to one part of your piece bacause you have to view it as a whole. You can also divide the workload into chunks; you'll do this much on this day, and this much on the next. So on and so forth. If you're still unsatisfied with how things look, you can always go back and fix things during post-production.

I'm terrible at drawing in general. So I'm inconsistent, I take my time only when I want to.

Speed is very important to me. I prefer to work on multiple pages at once (being doing all sketches, all inking, all flat colors), rather than doing one page all the way through.
I also combine this with development and pre-planning. I prefer to build up a strong buffer before I post anything. For me, a strong one is 1 - 2 chapters of buffer for each comic. That way, if I need to take a hiatus for whatever reason, I can see post and not have to worry if I can't make a page then.
