Just wondering, as a reader who are curious if anyone can make a little bit of money off webcomic, since it's free

For any of you who managed to get a few hundred bucks or more each month on patreon,
or at least a decent amount that would be enough to slightly motivate you a bit to keep your comic going

how long does it take you to get there from zero?
one month? six months? one year?

Does it seem like niche market like BL seems to encourage people to be a patron than a mainstream regular stories?

Your thoughts and input will be greatly appreciated
thanks!

I currently make ~$130/month on Patreon, and have about 40 backers.

It varies from person to person! If you've got a massive following already, and you start your Patreon, you're likely to see more patrons early - but if you start your Patreon when you don't have thousands and thousands of followers, it'll be slower going.

I've had my Patreon running for about 2.5 years, and have gained most of my patrons in the last 7-8 months. I had a small handful of followers when I started it, though, and have been building my audience along with it. Unless you're mega-popular when you start your campaign, slow growth is the norm for Patreon!

I have no idea, tbh. Most Patreons other than my own that I pay attention to tend to be webcomic creators, and they create a wide span of different things. I don't think any of the ones I keep an eye on are BL creators, but they tend to do well anyway - but then again, if they're popular enough that I know about them, they probably have that established audience anyway.

You're asking how long it takes?
How long is a piece of string, mate?

There's no foolproof formula or silver bullet. You just have to work your arse off, upload as often as you can and keep the quality as good as possible, then you cross your fingers, say three hail marys and sacrifice a goat.
If you want to make money, you must understand you're not creating artistic magic, you're making a product.
People tend not to throw money at you because you're a swell person.Offer something they can't get for free in exchange for money.
If your offer is enticing enough, they'll pay up

Just put all your sex scenes behind a paywall and watch the coins roll in wink

^...this post probably belongs in the "Fastest way to lose subscribers" thread xD

Offering NSFW stuff for patrons does work if that's in line with the type of content you produce but if you're putting sex scenes behind a paywall you'll probably piss people off, and perhaps even lose patrons. Cause, you know, your content can be nice and all but if you are a complete asshole, there's tons of people out there whose content they can enjoy without having to put up with the creator being an asshole.

Basically offer things that suit the audience, that they would really like to get their hands on, but isn't of absolute necessity in order to connect or understand the content you share for free. Not that you don't deserve money for that content, but it's just a bad business strategy as an online creator.

As for how long it takes, I have to agree with the "how long is a string?" thing. It varies from person to person. I've had my patreon for a little over a year and it's now at $400+, but the most of that has been added in the last 3 months or so.

My comment was mostly tongue in cheek, but I have Patreon'd comics I wouldn't have donated to otherwise because I wanted the uncensored NSFW scenes that were only available to Patrons, so it's a model that I know works. And I'm not sure why you're equating "putting sex scenes behind a paywall" to "being a complete asshole" because I don't think that's putting your porn behind a paywall is an asshole move. I have certainly never thought that about any of the artists I Patron. In fact I thought it was pretty smart because it raked them in tons of cash. (although I heard that they have a spike in Patrons when they upload NSFW and lose Patrons when they don't lol)

I mean, it's only a buck, I get to support an artist I like, and I get to look at porn. It's a win win baby

With the "asshole" thing I was thinking more of artists that only care about the fans that pay in general, sorry about the miscommunication.

Thank you for sharing, I truly appreciate the info

I'm just curious on this whole thing since it's really a lot of work to create webcomic for free
while most people do it out of love of the medium, a little $$ from patrons sure help imo

I like your view, it make sense smile
