How much attention and dedication do you put into Worldbuilding details!?

Greetings,
The question I'm talking about works either for a Comic or a Novel, I was quite curious how much dedication you put to have all the necessary infos to make your worlds work, either them be vital information that might be talked about during the plot, or even the silliest background thing that helps you to keep things organized and make sense of the whole thing.

For an example, for my Webcomic series "Stories from The Golden Garden" and it's planned following Web-Novel, among many other things that I've researched about frogs, avian, reptiles, mithological creartures, astronomy, planets, sci-fi tech, Ether etc..., one thing that I did become quite crazy about was Traveling times from location to locations, and by using england to help me with the scale and All, I've researched the timings for Train, car, and foot travel, and from them, after made the routes, end up making the Train Schedule considering also some loose minutes for delays... It took me half day to make the work on all of it... and I started the day with the revision of a chapter in mind, but it seem I got carried away.

Let me know about, what is a Detail for World building that you did concentrate the most!?

Are the trains in your fantasy world also horribly overpriced like here in England?

I did a lot of worldbuilding for Errant because it's set in an alternate universe version of Britain where King Arthur successfully fought off the Angles and Saxons, so the cities are all either named for places in Arthurian Legends or use the older Romano-Celtic place names. Leeds is called Adel, for example, which is its older name. With others I tried to factor in that the pronunciation would shift over time, so the main story takes place in Joysgard, which is derived from Joyous Guard, the castle of Sir Lancelot (it was originally called Dolorous Guard, but after he conquered it it wasn't dolorous any more so he renamed it). Fun fact, the Joysgard crest, which has only appeared very small on streetsigns and bins, is a shield with three red stripes on it, this is because Sir Lancelot had a shield with three red stripes he could use to gain super-strength that helped him take Dolorous Guard.

I also looked a lot into the pagan religion of Roman Britain, so for example, characters refer to gods like Sulis Minerva rather than saying "oh my god", "bloody hell" or other things that come from Christianity.

I have to do a lot of worldbuilding as my novel's only got original races and species, so I got my hands pretty full with the fun fleshing all aspects of their culture and society out. Given my inspiration comes from the Sanskrit Veda texts, yeah I got lots of fun here. XD

My series features our world a.k.a earth and another planet where the story mainly set in. I only need to world-build around that other planet, which geography and culture itself is based on the world we live in.

I concentrate the most around society and culture each ethno-racial group has; and their magical abilities since it is determined by that. I want to show different mentality of the people living in another planet, how it correlates with their magic ability, and how it moves the story.

I am not the person that dedicated to calculate travel time that way, though. My motto is "If you can bullshit it, bullshit it."

That sound so cool, quite like how I named some "Sport Champion" with english version of the names of the "Nonexistent Knight" characters, and made some of their particular trait make a tribute to the original Novel by Italo Calvino (Altought, those are their "Performing names" rather than their true one, but Still that was the concept).

Well....is hard to say. My current series takes place in space.

So they will visit other "worlds", but there is not ONE major world to do the worldbuilding.

Originally that was my plan, In fact, I've written tons of chapts when I first put down the draft, then, during revision, while also changing some parts to be more coherent to what came later, and fix some parts (I also have a personal "Lore Bible" With timelines, events and changes to apply to help me, plus a heigh chart to remember the character when parts of them need to be described)... But then, I go into a point where I am to think "THIS DOESNT MAKE SENSE, How come tehy get at that distance in such time", "The timings are not in line" or "And then, does the train just do that!? It will go to somewhere else, It has a schedule specific to which why it goes at that specific hours", and etc, etc, etc... Mostly, the parts I change the most are those I always fear could have "Holes". I have tons of text file just for the details like also the characters own daily schedule, their own timelines, and yet, I still haven't come up with a data sheet for each one of them...

Funnily enough, as much as I claim to be a pantser, my worldbuilding is the one thing I don't make up on the fly.

I basically pulled a Tolkien with my world. Originally Aphing was the only creation I was interested in. I created the world for its own sake, then the Aphuanian Script, then the culture, and now my stories are really just a vassal for my readers to explore it. The world itself has changed over the years just as I have, but that one bit has always been the same.

My current series is more character driven so what happens to the characters tends to mold the world around them. Aside from occasional strange creatures the world itself is pretty much like the one we live in, nature wise. The time period is centuries ago.

I pay extra attention to the characters and what happens to them and how they react. Because some of them are warrior I choreograph their swordfights. I've changed the main character's sword more to a Chinese Dao than a European one. Because I'm 5" 1' I have to adjust for a 6" tall character as to where a sword will land when he uses it. I have a suture kit ordered so I can practice sutures for one of the other characters.

I notice a few people mentioning travel so I do check to see how many miles can be covered by horse (with or without carriage) a day, etc. All of that is kind of basic.

I'm a total pantser so as things happen I write them down for reference later.

For my universe of comics, because it's so massive (and takes place mostly in the real world) I had to do a ton of worldbuilding. Luckily I've been fleshing out my comics universe for the past 8 years now so it's become easier overtime to understand all faucets of it. Also, it is worth noting that especially in my comics, alternate universes are a thing, and can sometimes be integral to the plot. At the moment, there's currently 250 characters that exist in my universe of comics and this includes OC's as well as supporting casts. I've told myself the cutoff for the number of characters is 500, so I'm already halfway done creating all of the characters. This is so in the future, we can hopefully get around to every single character, place them in a given story, and try to make them relevant. Although, some characters will inevitably be more popular than others, so not all of them will get the spotlight .

OH, MY, GOODNES! ANother one who worked on it for almost 8 years This is wonderfull!
How I can understand that, I too had so many chars, and the actual stoy that I've been writing for real in the last 3 years (With the Debut comics having been scripted starting from last years) is the result of various drafts of 3 Different series, one revolving fantasy with my protagonist originating from that one (Alfredo andh is friends), another one Sci-fi near future with Androids (Even Here more character made the cut) and in the end, a contemporary Sci-Fi set in our days (Alternate version) involving Frog-like aliens (From which the Marocca race originate and also another few characters that made the cut).
My Cast originally was around the 100, but in the end, in the final cut it became just below the 50.
EDIT: I add, I previously concepted as well the Alternate universe stuff, especially involving past version of the main character concepts, but in the end it didn't fit with the plot and it was so scrapped... like many other such as time travel, reincarnations etc... Even Isekai was thoguht but it would have been just a bad idea and also too much of a trend as of now!

Yeah, I get how doing alternate versions and stories is becoming more mainstream, but like you said, it's been many years since I started these comics. So I think the stories I'm telling are helping me to garner a small following. Both on Tapas and social media. So my formula is working and is becoming more fine tuned. I usually start with something that already tickles my fancy and look things up as I go. Most of my inspiration is from history, anecdotic or otherwise. I am not a consummate world builder, but I like interesting stuff and use it

I try not to spend too much time worldbuilding anymore because I have the tendency to get so focused on creatures and random lore that never actually hits the page, that I don't actually draw the main plot. So I try and do it concurrently with the writing, so that way it's never something that stops my writing in it's tracks (so sometimes I'll leave a placeholder for worldbuilding that may use things like language or architecture or whatever so I can keep on writing) but it can still be something that when I do go to draw the comic, it's there to refer to it. The thing is, with comics you don't have a background every single panel--in fact you usually only have it like once a page.

So my comic worldbuilding is mostly visual and it's stuff that I, the author knows, but it's stuff that I just have to accept will probably get edited out. Things like family trees, dates, histories, science, magic theory...it can be really hard to make that interesting in a comic.

I'm careful with how much time I spend on world building. It's one of those things that can suck all your time away.

That said. I've got quite a bit of lore, as I've been working on this story for about 12 years. The one thing I've always wanted is a giant sandbox world where I can have stories in every single setting type.
So...I've got a Sci-Fantasy world in which the planet is a Resort Planet that has...themed attractions..like Norse Myths, Arthurian Legend, Japanese Folklore, Futuristic Metropoli, Atomic Wastelands...the list goes on.

Then I've got the lore around the power system: Sparks. And the lore around the Martial Rangers, which is a faction the main character is part of.

My story takes place in an entire universe with millions of planets all governed by one giant super coalition: The Inter-Galactic Union.

All that said...I'm a pantser, so even though the world is fairly established, the stories that happen in it are written on the fly for the most part.

One thing to remember is that 90% of lore will never make it into the final product. Keep as many secrets for yourself as you can, and show only what the audience needs to see to understand the world. At least that's how I approach it.

The novel's I have posted are mainly low fantasy, meaning Earth with something extra, but I do have some high fantasy with worlds I have created. I take world building to the nth degree, the more built up and fleshed out you can make your world, the more concrete and proper your world seems because by having everything planned out and in an easily followed format: I always use bulleted lists for my world building, you avoid making plot holes or skipping over important details of your world. I go to the point of listing flora/fauna, mythical creatures and even using online world building formats to properly map out my worlds.
Deathblooded is the only novel I have that's high fantasy at the moment and when I do fantasy kingdoms, I structure their kingdom based on the history I write of it, like say a kingdom has always been a constitutional monarchy, how would that affect how the kingdom functions. How would a kingdom that's always been a dictatorship function? You have to understand how the kingdom would function before you even start fleshing out others to make sense.
It all depends on the kind of story you're telling, but I put a lot of effort into mine.

Instead of world-building to specific stories, I world-build based on concepts I really like (such as reincarnation, occult summoning, and god mythology). From there, I kinda spread out those concepts to my different stories. Sometimes, that means certain stories are in the same worlds.

I mostly do this to allow readers to come up with their own inferences about the smaller day-to-day interactions within each other. Also gives them a bit more freedom to explore my stories (especially if they want to create their own OCs and fanfictions for them).

It's seem to work so far! Think My Demon Valentine is the best example of this: even if Adonis's human disguise kinda fails here and there, the reaction from other humans is mild startled looks and awe. Which kinda implies that non-humans and the supernatural have existed long enough for people to be casual about it.

It really depends on if the world is for the story or the story is for the world for where my world building focus concerned.
My current project is the case that the world was built for the story I had in mind. It focuses heavily on names, magic, and the gods as well as certain factions. So I have a lot of symbols and stuff that I made up that are important to specific gods and pieces of important lore that line up perfectly in places.
On the other hand, my side project is a the stories are written for the world, so I've got 15 races, 26 religions, and a map planned out for it that includes biomes/elevations/temperatures.
Overall, all my worlds are fantasy so I tend to put the most concentration into magic, like is it hereditary? If it is, does it evolve through the generations? or is magic a learned skill, and so on and so forth. But I go on so many tangents, and get so hyper focused sometimes that I started contemplating the skeletal structure for a creature in my one story that is supposed to sound like a kazoo.
