Well, people don't like advertisers whose motives are as clear as water, they tend to evade and even just want to breath from someone who is constantly spamming their story, or doing stuff with the sole purpose of self promotion.
Most of the time is not about charisma, is not about spamming, is not about participating in a trend or topic, is simply about not being all the time at someone's faces with the intention to drag them with you.
To put a dumb example, most of the time I get commissions is not when I'm chasing them, nor when I'm advertising myself. I always got commissioned when I'm just enjoying myself or hyperfixating on a show/franchise/original characters then made art for it, no matter how lazy or messy it was. People can sense when you're desperately trying to get their attention, and it tends to have the opposite effect.
But that's just how my experience was, of course, still make your stuff for easy access to anyone who may have just a tiny bit of curiosity, too many steps are tiring thus why it is important that even if you're not purposefully wanting people to see what you do, to leave it in a golden plate just in case
