I've been posting here for a little over three weeks and I keep getting stuck every time the tag section comes up in an episode. Every platform works with tag differently so I'm wondering how exactly the tagging in Tapas works? What does it do and how does it help with discovery? And how do you use it in the right way?

It'd be really helpful if I could know if I'm doing this right. Here's a link of my comic:

I was wondering how readers find the series using tags. Did a search with tags after you said it and I understand it now! Thank you so much! :grinning:

hah honestly, I'm not sure if tags do anything.

like.. it would matter when ppl actively use the searchbar to find new stuff, i think?

or maybe it's for "if you read this, then maybe you will like this"

in that case it will do the most for you, if you use them as extended categories
like... uhh.. Magical girl as a genre
or mystery, or lgbt, etc

stuff like that

tbh i never tagged anything so i don't really know how that actually help readers

Yep, tags seem to be... kinda broken, unfortunately :frowning: Dunno, every time I tried to search for one of the tags I put under the episodes of my own comic, I couldn't find it for the life of me. The only tags that seem to work are the ones you put on your whole series, rather than individual episodes... which is a shame, since it'd be an awesome way to find stories.

...Also, spaces in tags don't work. They get automatically changed into underscores and, if you want to be able to find your tag, you have to manually type the underscores in it. So like, if you have "urban fantasy" as one of your tags, people would have to type urban_fantasy to find it. Makes me wonder how many series won't show up in tags because Tapas never made it clear how to search for a tag...

I was wondering about the underscore issue too. I noticed that most comics that have a similar genre with me use comic_strips as a tag so I decided to do that as well. Though I doubt anyone would actually search things with an underscore

It would be really helpful if the whole tag thing could be a more known matter to readers who are looking for things to read. But judging from how I just only got to know it today too (consideing I've been reading tapas series for a few months), I wonder how many people actually know how to use it properly.

yeaaa the whole system is a bit underwhelming.

generally, I think ppl only find comics through browsing the fresh, popular and trending page sorted by genre

Doesn't it seem like tagging the story/comic & then also tagging the episodes is redundant? Can having more tags make a difference?

I guess an episode might warrant a tag that's not truly appropriate for the whole story/comic. Example: "Steamy Sex" when maybe that's the only place in 100 episodes with sex. But then, that seems similar to "bait & switch" since it tried to hook someone into reading the story/comic with something that's not really what it is all about.

Yeah, that's what I think too. Using underscores for hashtags doesn't seem to be common anywhere afaik, and it's not like Tapas is making it clear that you should be inserting underscores when searching for tags with a space :expressionless: the whole tag system could really, really use some improvements ._.
(Edit: replied to the wrong post, sorry XD I was supposed to reply to your first post, not the second one!)

Lol, kinda glad you posted this - realizing that the tags we threw on there when we were starting are pretty terrible :sweat_02:.

I never bothered with episode tags because I heard they aren't used for anything...

Apparently the only tags that matter are the series tags--the episode tags are just a leftover from a bygone era and those aren't the ones being searched (but I could be wrong!)

I also noticed that even though we can publish something by selecting 2-3 genres, when updated, the series only shows up under the major genre page. It was a bit disappointing since I thought, being able to select three genres means my series will show up in the fresh page for 3 genres when I update.

Yeah, some reader friendly instruction under the pages about how to search tags would be nice so that readers can see it and know how to search for tropes they like. :expressionless:
(That's okay, Don't wory about it! XD)

@migxmeg @rajillustration Do you mean the 5 minutes I sit there wondering what to tag the episodes all go in vain? And I could use that time to get some snacks instead? Okay, that discovery hurt

Just made some testing.

Tags under the series main page on your dashboard will come under the tag sections at Tapas search.

Tags under each episode do nothing.
Some search engines like google might pick them up but they do not treat them as tags, just as random text.

The bright side is if they update it so that it matters you won't have to go back and tag all your eps. I worry about that sometimes :).
