How to use Twitter?

Use hashtags. Always include your profile name somewhere on your posts. Upload fan art. Lots of fan art. That's how bowserette became a thing.

Twitter is all about who follows you or how you follow other people. Ironically, I had famous people following me like Taye Diggs and Beyonce, and even one of Trump's henchmen. I deleted my Twitter only to come back after two weeks. It's all based on algorithms.

I use #comic #webcomic and #original hashtags for starters. You could also pin your comic to your wall and ppl who click on your profile would click on that.

Follow some well known artists, they usually participate in flashmobs like Art vs. Artist, Meet the artist, Signal Boost Sunday, and you will know which hashtags to use and what to post, depending on what they post.
You can also @ reply other artists if you made a fanart for them, maybe they will like it and retweet too.

I think the problem with drawing fanart is that people will follow you for fanart and once you start posting your own oc work people start dropping off, because it's not why they followed you for.

Haven't you seen Art vs Artist anywhere? It's just as popular on Instagram too. Not like it's giving you a huge boost or anything, but without those hashtags no one will see you on these sites at all.

It's good for artists to make a tweet with some basic information (like a link to your comics and other social media, your email, say if you make commissions...) and pin it so people will always see it first on your profile.

Also, hashtags are good, but I noticed people don't like seeing too many hashtags on twitter, I try to use just 3 or 4...

I've probably had more commissions off Twitter than anywhere else, so here's my advice:

• Try to get a catchy username that doesn't have 8 numbers after it. People will assume you're a bot if you have a lot of numbers after your username. Luckily you can change it after signing up.
• Make sure there's a link to a portfolio in your bio.
• Have stuff you drew as your avatar and banner.
• Post art regularly, but don't JUST post about art. Twitter is all about your "Personal Brand", so having a personality and opinions is important there. Be honest, a little self-deprecating humour goes down well, but don't complain excessively about personal problems.
• Have hobbies and interests outside of drawing and don't just follow artists. You know what people very rarely commission artists because mostly they can do tasks that require art themselves? ARTISTS! You know what people commission artists a lot more? People who can't do the job themselves, ie. non-artists! So if you're into a certain game or hobby start following cool people who are into that and tweeting about it, they might want commissions sometimes. Most of my work I've picked up on twitter has been through D&D, games or tech people, because I'm interested in those things and so are a lot of other people who don't draw but want art for their games, events, promo etc.
• Retweet things that interest you, but avoid spamming your feed with loads of similar tweets and retweets.
• If you can tell jokes, tell jokes. People love jokes. I told a silly D&D joke and it got nearly 30,000 likes one time.

Personally, Instagram is better for posting art since the quality for pictures in twitter kinda suck. However a lot of people from tumblr migrated to twitter so it would be better to know your audience.

First, you need to be respectful of everyone and everything unless it's problematic since twitter users LOVES to drag people by quote-RTing causing people to attack the initial poster.

Second, avoid quote-RTing artist's art. Most artists finds that disrespectful since it takes away the likes and retweets from the original post. Do reply/comment as you wish tho.

Third, focus on finding like-minded people first because twitter is all about interactions and you would need people/friends to RT your work to gain traction. Tags are sometimes useful but successful twitter users that I've seen usually relies on wit/humor or mainstream fan art to gain traction. Else just be mutuals with popular twitter users.
