How was your first comic?

Hi! I just recently upload my first webtoon and the result is not as much as I expected it will be. Is first webtoon always this depressing? I kind of regret for posting it because I just got my tablet like three weeks ago and I rushed myself to make a webtoon since I turned 20 this year. I wish someone could share about your first webtoon experience with me.

I wouldn’t know much about making comics, as I don’t make them. But based off what I see from others, instantly getting popularity is hard, especially if you’re doing more than one project at a time. If you’re only working on your first, then don’t expect it to be to your expectations.

90% of the battle feels like it lies in getting yourself out there and promoting yourself wherever you can (Like here, in other forums, on social media and so on)

I'm currently struggling myself, along with my artist, to just get those few extra views and subs, while I check the stats obsessively every day. It's not healthy xD

Some do have luck and gets discovered quite quickly with the rest of us just having to learn the hard way
A good idea would be to post your link in your post, as it wouldn't be out of place, and would give people the opportunity to check it out, and maybe give you one or two followers.

I'm pretty new around these parts, but I've been posting my comic on tumblr going 3 years now. It takes a while to build a following. Granted, my comics are very sketchy, so I wouldn't say it's my art that brings people in, but I think what helpped me start to develop a following were the simple things:

• a regular posting shedule
• communicating with my audience
• linking my work in places people would be interested

The last one can be a challenge, but you just got to figure out your audience. In my case it's Tabletop gamers, so I would post about my comics in appropiate reddit channels, or just join discord groups about TTRPGs and meet new friends! It's great, because you get to meet lots of talented people and see all of THEIR content as well as getting others to look at yours.

Oh mine was terrible! My first really earnest attempt at a webcomic was like 15 years ago when I was about 20. I had like 20 readers or less. The site it was on doesn't exist any more, but it's still on my old Deviantart.

I had to reboot this concept and these characters a couple of times, each time doing it a bit better before taking a break, making some short comics, doing work for print and working as a professional illustrator a number of years and coming back to it last year to make something half decent!

In other words, it's okay if your first attempt is rubbish and hardly has any readers. You'll get better with practice and build an audience if you just keep working hard!

My first comic was before webcomic hosting sites existed. So I had my friends read it and they did since they were the characters. Now it's just the wallpaper in my room.

Yeah... you definitely need more experience for this, that a week of using a tablet, especially if you haven't been drawing a lot before that

My FIRST comic was of course pretty bad and I only really made it for fun to see what I could do, despite being very inexperienced with making comics (this was a good few years ago). But the first comic that I posted (and I am still posting it to Tapas and Webtoon) I'm pretty proud with. I didn't get a lot of views, but I kind of expected that. You won't get immediate popularity and views, but just give it some time. If you like your work and you're working hard on it, then some people are bound to find it and enjoy it. So what I learned, just be patient and keep doin what you're doin.

Don't get discouraged just because people aren't viewing your stuff yet. Just keep going and eventually you'll get a following!

Edit: But also don't rush yourself! Go at a pace you're comfortable with.

Sure! Once I finished my first webtoon, I thought of doing collaboration with someone but it just the plan tho haha

I'm currently going through my first webtoon experience . I don't have any social media audience so I'm pretty new myself. When I posted the first three episodes on February, I got around 20 subs in the first week. When I posted weekly from there I got around 10 subs tops with each update. Some how I got lucky enough to be discovered and got featured in canvas staff picks for March which gave me a super boost in subs, I kinda got stuck after the end of the feature, even lost a few subs, but it's slowly increasing now again. I also post the same comic on Tapas and got a small feature there too for not too long ago.

Now, I do agree with sonten about a webcomic's chance of gaining quick popularity depends on theme of the comic itself and a little bit on how good your art is (like me, I get hooked by a comic's art and may stay for the story). Aside from that you also have to stay dedicated enough to build an audience. Overnight popularity is super rare (unless you were already a well known artist from before), but gaining a following over time is guarantee.

I recommend treating it as a marathon, not a sprint!
