What the title says. There's a thing in art called master studies that you're encouraged to do. I've been doing them for a while. I think they're a great way to learn. The name of this artist is Cory Loftis. He's a concept artist at Disney. I haven't tried coloring it yet, but I plan to try on that in my next iterations.

Nicely done!
I can even see some Jamie Hewlett peaking through the original and your study. Good work.
It not really possible to do master study of novel, is it? Only pastiche.
The original artist has a quirky style, a lot of the appeal is in the gesture and his stylizing and exaggeration.
I colored it. Pretty proud of myself as I tried my best to not use the eye dropper tool and just guess the colors in the picker.
I've never heard of doing a master study. What does that entail?
I've never heard of it either. Though I've been copying the artists I like ever since I could hold a pencil. Inspiring stuff from the likes of Frazetta, Buscema, Kirby, Adams, Kane, McGuinness, Campbell, Hughes, Lightle to name a few.
Ooo, I know Cory Loftis. I have the "Art of Zootopia" book, and I love his art.
What is a master study though?
Master study is making a copy of the artwork (doing your best to recreate it) to research and to connect with the process and technique of original artist, to see how and where they put the colours, to understand how and what artists were doing to make this piece, all that. Students in art schools are doing them a lot (or so I heard, lol).
It what they mean when they say "Study the old masters."
@Kiweevil @CarltonIsaac @LovelyOtter@Kelheor is right.
Master studies are a really common practice when it comes to learning art.
Ah, good to know. So that's what I was doing on my own without knowing the term when I copied all those comic book greats all those years ago.
The art school I went to only had us doing bowls of fruit, the outdoors and a lot of nudes.
Your master study looks great! There's a lot to learn in that linework. I really recommend doing a bunch of them, they're really helpful. For some reason some can find it wrong or weird to copy other artists, but its how a lot of artistic traditions have been passed down.
I did this one of a Monet painting a while ago and it basically taught me everything I know about color and light.
It not bowl of fruit, but me like it.
