This is an alt acc, and I just want to say that I draw BL because it pays a lot of money, specially in the 3rd world that I live in, and it's just bleh, I want to draw fantasy / action for guys, not bl / romance for gals, but it pays, and I need the money, not to mention that the country is breaking records on terms of unemployment, and the min wage is a joke, I just need $200 to reach that, and I make a lot more than that drawing hot guys making out... anyway, should I give up on my dreams of drawing battle shounen? your average WT reader don't care about that sort of stuff, and it shows, I tried multiple times before, a normal day job is out of question, it's ultra hard, and pays very little, my backup plan is drawing furry pr0n lmao.

Maybe just haven't got the proper story/concept to make a Battle Shonen work. I'm a writer, I could hear your concept out and help you edit them if you have some.

Is there a way for you to draw BL for a living and draw shounen for yourself? Can you use your name in BL to leverage an audience for your shounen? A lot of women like shounen too (some of the most popular shounen titles only get the top spot due to their popularity with both genders). Maybe you can get a gig drawing more, uh, fantasy/action-y BL and get the fans of that to follow you to your shounen? Success is not going to happen overnight, but if you're already a professional comic artist, you do have one hurdle cleared.

You can always have a side project with the shonen you wanna make.....

or combine the genres, like making a shonen with bl as subgenre?

You could be like Black Butler and make your series an action-fantasy that's "not technically BL" with the occasional fanservice scene since you say you're good at drawing BL.

And according to some friends, furries have MONEY money

The furry fandom really likes to splash the cash. So long as you're comfortable with it, you could make bank drawing NSFW stuff for them like, a few days a week, and do your battle shounen comic as a passion project on the side. (I'd advise keeping those accounts very, very separate, though.)

I mean you gotta do what you gotta do to pay the bills but just know that trends move on--like right now it's still pretty BL heavy, but action comics could come back in a huge, huge way. You really never know. So your dreams of writing that battle shounen can absolutely still happen, so no, I don't think you should give up on it just because of a couple of false starts. It's pretty normal for people to put out many, many webcomics before getting any money at all.

And honestly, since you have the BL comic to fall back on, that's actually putting you in a good position--those readers could potentially become readers of your action comic down the line.

One thing I've learned over the years is that you don't need to particularly enjoy your job to do it, you just need to not hate it. Your job allows you to live and you're particularly lucky that your job allows you to keep sharpening your drawing skills for projects in your free time that you do enjoy. If you earn enough money to have some free time, you can use that time and money for your own projects
