What do I do? I can’t name a reason I have this plot detail and I can’t say I think it’s a good idea, especially when added so thoughtlessly, but it’s still there and not removable.
Why exactly isn’t it removable? Anything in a story can be removed, it’s just a matter of how easy it is to remove

So I want to replace a character being oppressed for having grey skin and being used for exploitable labor with something equivalent but not metaphorically racial in nature.
He can just be poor then. Poor people are the usual targets for exploitable labor. No need to replace an entire character.
Yeah, just ramp up class distinctions based on wealth. Or give the character a criminal history resulting in legal or social infringement.
