It's been bugging me recently, but besides comics I also read manga on other sites, and lately I keep seeing familiar titles from Tapas in the updates. It's a grey area, because technically every manga is uploaded without author's permission. But when I see a Tapas comic that you can read here for free anyway, or even premium comics that you're supposed to pay for, it doesn't sit well with me.

So please check these manga sites for your comic if you don't want them uploaded there! I don't want to see anyone's hard work go to waste.

Are there specific sites that they're appearing on? I've always heard about this sort of stuff but hounding the net to find every single place something shows up can be time consuming without like a list or something

I already spotted Fools, they say i was born a kings daughter and Adonis so I imagine there's a handful more.

I think something like this has happened before but with a youtube channel where they uploaded episodes after they were released on tapas. I think a good start would be to report this if possible on the site, though whether or not the folks there would listen is unknown especially given the fact that they're uploading these comics (as far as we know) without permission.

I'm not sure about the process either but there should also be something within the DMCA that would make their actions illegal. Like I can google "Fools Webtoon" and there's a lot of results that pop up but also the note at the bottom that looks like this

"In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at LumenDatabase.org."

It's honestly a pain when stuff like this is constantly happening but it always seems to happen on such a large scale :disappointed:

I've already alerted two Tapas creators this year, especially since one of them specifically asks people not to even translate their comic. I'm not a true member, I just visit the site as a reader, so I can't report it that way, but for now I'll just alert the creator if I come across it.

But the premium ones are annoying, since many commenters were glad they didn't have to get Tapas coins to read them. Usually there's someone kind on there though who encourages people to look up the original.

Tapas staff should do something about their premium comics getting leeched.

That's so weird! That site actually asked me to upload my comics there last year.

When they do upload un-authorized comics, or any site does. Do they keep the title of the comic the same?

or do they change it to something else to help it stay hidden?

Also isn't reverse image searching a better way to find your comic in other places on the internet rather than manually looking site by site?

i don't think they even bother much of the time. A lot of those sites seem to run by Chinese bootlegers.

I've noticed these manga hosting sites have different domain name but share the same webpage layout too.

Those are just always around:/
If there was a way to stop it, it would have been done already. I read somewhere that Shounen Jump(big ass professional manga company) had to actually speak out against scantalation because they were interfering so much:(
Sometimes a nice person will link to tapas in the comments though.

I can understand that. Many creators have accounts on other places like Webtoons or Smackjeeves for more exposure. I do see there's usually someone in the comments who encourages people to support the original. And if the creator doesn't mind or posts it themselves, then I suppose that's fine. It's a gray area since it is a fanmade site and not official. It just bothers me when people can read the original online anyway and support the author.

put your patreon page link on the final part of every page and you get extra exposure plus you didn't have to do any work XD

you can't stop these sites so might as well exploit them :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Good idea! Just like putting your link or social media handle hidden in online artwork.

That's my thing XD
If it's not free, I understand the idea. But like...too many of those comics that pop up are free. You can go to the source and support the artist there. For free

Honestly, for me, it's too much work. Because of lot of times, these places have viruses that are dangerous to your computer, or the uploads are low quality, or you can barely see the content because some rambo decided to add a border around it.

I mean, if you're that thirsty for free content, feel free. But it just feels like too much work...
I'd rather just pay when I can and support from the side XD

The answer is this: it's easier to read the webcomic on a site you're familiar with and using multiple website is always considered as 'complicated and bothersome' by many (this is really the case with a lot of peoples I came across the sites).

Not only comic, even translated novel have the stealer and reposted in mirror site such as wattpad. But if a lot of peoples reported the stealed novel here's, it got taken down pretty quickly, and a lot of translator (on novel updates) had been making a counter measure against them such as posting the chapters as images, false link, etc, but with comic, its harder since one use any browser and just download the comic directly.
