With their writing and art I mean?
I’ve noticed over the years that the stories and artworks that most viscerally affect me all have something in common; a thread that resonates with me.
It’s a mixture of wonder and melancholy, and the feeling that you’re not important? Idk, It’s hard to describe, but I want to write stories that construct this feeling in other people. That’s what I mean when I say I’m searching for it.
In all my notes I refer to this mix of emotions as “THAT emotion”, and it’s become this overarching quest in my artistic life to break it down and figure out the ingredients that go into making it.
It’s a hunt! And I already know it’s going to be a lifelong thing; I always have my antennae tuned in the background, waiting to pick up on a clue that might lead me to a breakthrough! it’s not the ONLY emotion I want to elicit in people when they engage with my work, I want them to be sad and angry and hyped and whatever else, but it is the thing that everything I do artistically is aimed towards.
The mangaka Hirohiko Araki (famous for Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) said in his book that going for a feeling was for the masters. I couldn’t agree more. Who Killed the Dreaming Girl? is the first comic that I’m serious about, but I’m not consciously aiming for “THAT emotion” - I just want it to be fun and easy to read (baby steps people). However; by virtue of being created by me, when the credits roll there will be a chip of “THAT emotion” buried somewhere in the comic, and that’s what I’ll take with me to the next project!
Slowly by slowly, I’ll put together the ingredients and in time I’ll be able to reliably construct that feeling in another person. When that happens I’ll consider myself a success!
I’m really curious to know if other people have an equivalent to “THAT emotion”; some high level goal they’re aiming at; something they’re searching for through their art and writing,.. let me know below.
